is 225lbs enough weight to right an older 16 w/ heavy hulls

Good luck! Without shroud extenders and/or a bucket, I wouldn't count on it. When I was younger (and heavier) I could sometimes right my 16 solo, given the right wind,waves, karma, alignment of the planets, etc., but I couldn't be sure.

I right mine with 165 lbs... it is more technique then anything else. The light days are when it gets difficult. Theoretically you should not capsize on those days... Lack of attension is what might mess you up - for that it would be helpful to have a back up system of choice ( water bucket, pole, ...).
Hull weight... not sure about the stuff from the '70's, but the hull weight from my '85 is not significantely different from the current hulls. I doubt that it effects righting ability in a messurable way. Mast (full aluminum vs. comp tip) or tramp (vinyl vs. mesh) probabely have more impact on the ability to right. The 10 lbs more or less in the hull probabely do not matter much.

I agree with yoh. It is definitely technique. The first time, at 200 lbs solo I couldn't get it for at least an hour. Then I got the bows into the wind and up it came with hardly any effort. I use a Hawaiian righting line. Done it dozens of times now, solo and with crew. Never once had any trouble. Don't understand all the bags and poles everyone is always talking about getting.
