replacing main halyard

snapped the line trying to hoist the main...always a tough last few inches...but this time the line snapped just above where it hooks to top of main sail...bought a new one and will thread it tomorrow...any suggestions? 1,2,3 steps? things to watch out for?

Nothing special about feeding a CompTip halyard. If older... wire, will need a swedge tool.



It doesn't have to be so hard. Take a quick read of my sail hoist FAQ:

The key is to pull less, not more on the halyard. Concentrate on the sail feeder area and force the sail up just above it. Takes all the work out of this process.

Matt, thanks for posting these detailed and well written instructions. I have the exact problem mentioned earlier in this thread with my H18. It binds 9"-1 foot below the hook. Also, I have a "flopper" and my cat is '82. Do you recommend removing this?

My mast is bent about a few degrees at a wierd place above the diamond wire spreader which I'm working on with tensioning one diamond wire more than the other. Can a slightly bent mast contribute to binding.

Also, do you recommend a specific silicone sail lubricator? I've read about sailcoat and silicone spray, but don't want to use anything that would hurt the fabric. A few weeks ago I was having a lot of problems and found some vaseline in a car travel bag which made the sail easier to raise, but it still bound the last foot.

When the sail becomes filled after a tack in light wind, I noticed there is 1-2 stiffeners that takes a few seconds to pop back. When I read your article it clicked that these may be too tight.

but I am going to remove this as soon as I can to keep dirt away from the sail.
