1st post here, and its a doozy...

i started sailing Hobies in Antigua at my bro's wedding at the Sunsail yatch club....hobie 16 dragoons...i had a blast, it was my 1st time out on a trap...

anyways, long story short, i picked up a 14turbo, outgrew that and sold it, and just bought a 16 that im restoring...

in the process, im buying a bunch of upgrades, one of which is a travler control upgrade....and something has me thinking...

ive been sailing since i was 6 for a little background (im 22 now)

Ok here we go:

suppose you are on a port tack on a close-hauled point of sail....the crew would be using the starboard side jib sheet line, correct? and that would be attached to the travler track on the starboard side....looking at all the pictures, if you pulled in the travler control line on the starboard side, it wouldnt do anything, beacuse the force of the wind is pushing the travler car all the way to the end of the track-from what it looks like, the bungie cord is the line that needs to be pulled in to pull the jib towards the center of the boat!!!

what in the hell am i not seeing? are you supposed to control the jib on a port tack with the port side jib sheet!?!? that would bring the leach of the jib on the port side of the mast!?!?!

You have it right lee side sheet is used. Natural load on the jib and sheet tension actually draws the car closer to the inboard end of the track. The traveler line is required to pull the car outboard, the bungee returns the car to inboard end of the track. You usually use the traveler for downwind sailing and in some higher wind situations travel out just a bit. Most will leave the car inboard at all times.

for real? i would think its the exact opposite (though i havent sailed a hobie with a jib travler)

i mean- the main sheet trav. naturally tries to go to the outboard side of the track, why would the jib be any different?

i know it wouldnt be like that if it didnt work, im just trying to figure out how it works !

Yep, unrestrained by line bungee or a pin... the car seeks an inboard position. That is why we only need a bungee to pull inboard and use a line, cleat or adjustment pin to hold the car outboard.
