I just bought a 1982 Hobie 16 and on the boom there is bracket that looks like the tang on the mast only smaller. I already have a H16 and have never seen this before I think it may be for a boom vang but not sure any ideas?
I would also like to mention the guy has this boat under a cover and the hulls are bright and pretty so if your boats outside COVER IT!!!!!

It is for a vang. Nobody ever really uses them on a 16.

It's good for whacking someone in the head though. Hobie went to a flush fitting in the mid 80's, but later on, they just stopped putting a vang fitting on the boom.

New boats do not have them.

That tang looks like it would kill you if it hit you in the head. I have an extra boom so no big deal. Thanks!

I call it a "Back scratcher" because thats all its good for. It will rip your back a new one during tacks and jibes if your not watching.

By the way, I just drilled out the 4 rivets on the old " back scratcher" tang.... and filled the holes with some JBWeld, lick of black paint, and boom is good to go.......
