 Post subject: sailing hobie 16 advice

newbe here i've got me a new new to me anyway hobie 16 82' i weight 150lbs 5'10" will i be able to right this boat by myself i live in houston area the wind is gusting at all times so sooner or later i'll lose it.i've seen the buckits they sell but someone told me i could handle it but i would like another opinion thanks for your time.lee

A newbe, 150 lbs., righting a Hobie 16 by himself.....Doubtful! Whoever told you you could, have them sail with you; capsize your boat; you try righting it by yourself with your friend/crew coaching you. He'll be there with you as "back-up" in case you need more help.
I'm afraid you'll need a righting bag in order to right your H-16 by yourself.

It all depends. Ive found with the right wind angle, if you can get the tip of the mast out of the water, you can get the wind to lift the sail almost with no effort. The best angle is 45 degrees to the wind with the wind under the main. Make sure to hold the lee hull so it doesnt go over the other side and then you have to start again. If there is a good breeze it really helps, but Ive gone over a few times and then the wind dies and it can be a pain. Im bigger than you too, 6' 9" and 230lbs so I definitely have an advantage over most people. Good luck!
