make old hulls look new??? how

I have just bought an H16 from friend who gave me a good deal. The boat is in good working order, but I would like to invest a little this winter and pretty it up. Can I paint the Hulls??? if so, what kind of paint??? Also, where can I get new carpet for the sides of the tramp. any info would be great...........thanks

I used two coats of West Marine Sea Gloss Pro and a foam roller. After two seasons it still looks great. And my boat stays on the beach (in the weather and sun) for six months out of the year. Not sure they make Sea Gloss in any other color than white though.

Please don't paint it; you'll just stare at it in a year and really hate it.

Borrow or rent a commercial buffer and take your time with a mild rubbing compound, the use a good coat of marine wax. You will have to do this yearly, but you will always have a really good looking boat.

If you are from the Gore Mountain area with less UV, you may prefer to use VertGlas to refinish and seal the Gelcoat; it's less work, and it requires a touch up seasonally. I use this on my H18, but it does not take the Florida sun well when I take it there for six weeks.

paint? - not paint?

not much help - I'd like to know the same - my hulls are staining easily - we have a NATURAL inland lake that is quite muddy and the hulls get that tea-stained look easily from sailing. Wouldn't paint help seal them from staining? How ever when I see painted hulls they do look strange. (not natural) overly shiney and clearly painted. But worth it is they don't stain.

Any of those pricy CLEANERS stain removers really work in the cataloges? How about the PUTTY epoxy stuff? that work well? I'd like to fill in some chips and rough edges where the upper deck meets the side of the hulls. One of my boats has a lot of rough edges.

What a timely topic for me! I was just going to post a related question.

I just bought my 1982 hobie and its completely rebuilt (mostly by me...), I have spent lot of time time this summer stripping "selling" paint from all the metal.
My hulls are very nice.. all white, nice red and black pinstriping, some hobie logos... however i just noticed.. they TOO have been painted. Its a flat white paint and no "glass" look. Its pretty, but it anit right. And the paint is easily scratched...

If i remove this paint.. what will be underneath?
Can I buff out the glass to bring back the glassy shine?
or
Should I just get used to white painted hulls? Maybe painted hulls are easier to maintain? they are super simple to touch up..

what do you think?

FSR (Fiberglass Stain Remover) does a great job of removing yellowing from muddywater and other stains. However, you will need to do a good buffing with a mild rubbing compound to restore the color/sheen. I would try that before painting. You can always paint later if not pleased with the results.
