For you guys that keep track, what sort of top speeds have you achieved in your 16? I need something to shoot for!

I read 18mph on my GPS and at times was going faster but too busy to look down at the GPS. That was on a lake and the water was relatively smooth. My grandson was my crew, out on the wire and loved it.

I have hit 18.6 two different times. My last sail, I think I went faster, but I didn't bring GPS. I solo sail on a lake. Av. winds are 5-6 mph, with some sustained 10-12 mph gusts. I am sure I have maxed out speedwise, until I master trapping out, but my lake is so gusty it is really hard to learn.

If you aren't sailing on the edge, you're taking up too much room.

I got chased by a Jet Ski once, and they sounded like they were at full throttle! No gps but it felt real fast!

Most jetskis will easily do 35 knots. Some on the market now can hit 50 or better. I doubt they were full throttle.

1st post, long time lurker. the posts above here are those really mph? or knots, because We sailed our '83 h16 17.5 knots with 10-15 knots wind. that was about 110 degrees of the wind.

keep it pointing up!

For me it's definitely MPH. I'll someday get to 18kts(21mph).

This is true, however, at least where I sail, when the wind is strong enough that you can start challenging the jet skis, the chop also kicks up and those guys have to back off or else they take a pounding. Meanwhile the Hobie cuts through the chop, so sometimes you can give them a run for their money.

On flat water, it would be no contest.

I keep my GPS set to mph because I also use it to check my cars' speedometers. Even using mph, 18 is fast for a sailboat.
