I GOT YOUR "RING DINGS"for the 16 thread.

Ok so in a day of sailing you set up then pack up. You handle "ring dings" a toal of at least 8 times. Four for the set up, four for the pack up.
So we are all on the same page I use one clevis pin w/ "ring ding" on each stay port /stbd. and the one for each rudder pin. You guys are all probably much wiser and or older than I am and, I'm sure atleast one of you wise men here has figured out a way to do away with "ring dings" alltogether.
How and with what?
Regarding the stays I was thinking of a "fastpin" but am worried that it will inadverntly get knocked out while underway that would be bad. Or some thing would get cought up on it because of the over abundance of legenth. I can't find one short enough. So I'm thinking some sort of locking clevispin would be safer.....ideas/workarounds?

OOPs I did not realize I was in the 14 thread I'm going to copy and paste this in the 16 thread too. Sorry about the waste.

Why are you disconnecting the shrouds when trailering? I just bungee them up by the mast and forward.

With the rudder pins... for like, $2 you can go to the crafts section of Wal-Mart and they have a baggie of 12" aluminum wires for making fake flowers & stuff. You can just push a bit of wire through the hole in the pin leaving maybe 1/2" out on either side. Then use pliers to bend the wire around so it's not poking anything important or hanging up. Later you can just un-bend the wire and remove & throw it away. The only reason you have something on that side of the pin is to keep it from falling out and losing your rudders in the unlikely event that you turtle. The wire doesn't carry any load.

I had to build/modify my trailer, I dont know what the stock HOBIE trailer setup is but i have to totlly take everything off my mast. I perfer to do it that way lest i forget something and end up draging a shroud for 30 miles and sherdding it *see murphies law.
Good Idea for the rudde pins though.

Watch out with what pin you use, I used a quick release pin and also I used a cotter pin with the clevis, and it fell out on a choppy day, which resulted in a dismasting in the middle of the lake, and a torn jib sail... and of course... "the tow of shame". Murrays sells a good ring ding, that the tip is bent down for easy realsing and it holds up great, so much easier to install and uninstall and its safe.

I built my trailer too. I leave the shrouds attached, I only remove the forestay. I do that the same with my monohulls too. I have a hard time seeing why you would have to remove both shrouds as well. On my trailer, the mast rests on a 4'6" mast support forward of the tramp, and then on the rear of the frame, leaving the masthead about even with the rudders. The mast base sticks over the top of the tow vehicle. My monos have a similar setup. As far as the "ring dings," I'd far rather have the security of the round rings than a pull pin or something similar, rather than risk a dismasting, even if it might take some weird, fluke condition to make it do so. Hey, it's only one pin, no biggie. Hope this helps.
