Little Help with H16 Please

Hi Everyone,

I just bought my first Hobie 16. I'm very new in this sport, just getting ready to start sailing. The boat itself is in great shape (for what I understand), but the sails are very beat up, especialy main sail. Jib is missing bottom batten and has small rip in the middle, main sail is missing 3 battens and has 3-4 rips around corners. So my question to all You professionals is what do I do? Should I look for new sails (extremely expensive for me), used sails or try to patch up old ones. I have no clue what they charge for paching ripped sails. Or maybe someone knows where to buy cheaper sails and battens. Thanks You very much, all help is much appieciated. can't wait to get out on the water.

I would start out by finding a local sail repair shop, and see if they can help you with the rips in the sails. If you find that for some reason they can't do it, or it's going to be rather expensive, I would then try getting a pair of used sails.

I agree that new sails are way too expensive for me too!

From the amount of damage you described I think a set of used sails might be your best bet. Keep looking on this forum and see what you can come up with. Shipping the battens is a pain because of the length.

The stuff you described sounds fairly minor.

Replacing the battens will be more expensive than having the sail fixed.

Thanks You all for the help. Have one more question: My battens are stiking out of the sail by 1,5-2 Inch. When I tighted them should I push them all the way in untill they bend and then cleet them???

They should stick out some. You only want a slight amount of tension on the battens. If the jib battens stick out too much and hang up on the mast (which is an H16 trait by the way) you can trim them to the point they barely stick out and tape over them. My jib battens stick out only about 1/2 inch but the main battens stick out a good bit further.
