Just thought I would share a wild ride we had this afternoon.

we teach sailing on hobie cats at a gospel camp. went up for the afternoon sailing classes and when we arrived the wind was cranking pretty fair. white caps everywhere on the lake waves going over the dock. The lake is 90 miles long and can form some serious water action in the wind.

Before taking any teenagers out for first lessons the three of us (instructors) thought we better make a run across the lake first to test things out.

Nairn took the helm, Bart took the wire and I sayed on the rim with feet hooked in manning the jib. Our combined weight was 625 pounds with about 250 out on the wire.

Well needless to say we took off flying and once out on the lake we were pounding through the waves working hard keeping the boat balanced and the fromm pearling (using a surfing term).

At one point we sent Bart flying off the boat and managed to keep afloat and drag him back up, Adrenaline rush. On the second run across the lake were were rippping fast and we went through a wave that knocked Bart back off the wire inocking nairn off the back of the hobie. Bart grabbed him and as the hobie was pitching back I had scrambled all the way up and over the front. back on course we had to come about and stalled in irons. We backed up and managed to pull away and launched into another tack crossing the lack on a bit of a run so we could haul back to the beach.

Well we managed to get back into shore just perfectly, pretty exausted. We decided to not take the youngsters out.

As it turned out the winds werre 40 km/hour with gusts up to 50.

It truly was a blast, deinite adrenaline rush!!

I was actually surprised we didn't pitch it over once or twice.

I hope everyone else is out there having a blast!!!

Gus

That wouldn't be Last Mountain would it? The wind can really get up on that lake. One thing about SK is that there shouldn't ever be a lack of wind. Now if it would stop raining that would be great. I presume the water level is quite high this year.

I love that lake. I'm going to be there all next week. We will be half way up the lake on the east side at Arlington beach camp. There will be four 16' on the beach all week. Come on up for a sail.

Good Morning,

We are on the beach on the west side at kedleston beach, last mountain lake to be sure!! nick named long lake.

If you get down this far we have three hobies, two calibres parked in the trees as the water is so darn high.

The roughest sailing is with the northwest winds as it pushes water all the length of the lake, but if it is right it is fantastic as you can race between the swells skimming one hull along the surface of the upper swell almost the entire width of the lake.

I will have to see how far up arlington beach is from kedleston!!

Would be fun to get out rocking with others!

Sounds like an awesome lake! I am jealous that you have some consistent windy places which makes it sound like a great ride for everyone!

Good afternoon,

just got home for the weekend after a couple more days sailing: Wednesday it was to windy to really go out, tons of white caps and rain. Thursday we had good enough wind to have people out on the trapeze (teenage lads and ladies). and we managed to do some hull flying too at times. today we sailed a couple more hours but wind was pretty light. I was aching from the week of sailing so we pulled the pin.

Arlington beach is about 30 miles north of us so I do not Reckon I will sail up for a day sail!!! We are closer to regina, yuo guys are clkoser to Saskatoon I reckon.

One thing about Saskatchewan, we have lots of wind and plenty of water. Great place to learn to sail.
