11' beam on a 16'?

My friend and I got an old 16' for free. It's trashed! It is our 3rd 16'. We are going to try something new on this one, a 11' beam. I know it might be really dumb, but it will give us something to do this winter. We are having the tramp made for us and the shrouds. We will keep it at the lake as it will be too wide to trailer. My dad in making the cross bars. What do you think? Has it been done before? Dumb?

Pitch pole machine. Wider and not longer tends to cause more load on the lee bow and more pitch pole potential. We see this when adding wings to boats as well. An 18 with wings is a bit like sailing a 16. With the added hiking leverage, you can more easily over power the hulls.

I think that without dagger boards it will be nearly impossible to tack. but hey, go for it and report back on how it works!

Why would trailering be an issue?

tilt it. Works for all the other boats that aren't legal to tow flat.

And Matt's right, pitchpole machine. I'd add some footstraps.

It will give us something to look forward to this spring...

I would love to see this too. Its a great idea I think...cloud forming over my head. The pitch-pole physics may be better with some out rigger (river kyak, pregnant surfboard like) pontoon wings, Which will also shift the cog lower and rearward. The wings will give you your wider beam, and if you make them foldable or easily removable- you can still trailer it. Maybe could rig it with stock size wing tramps. The added weight would require a very lightweight crew though to me most effective. You probably would want the out riggers to be about 12" or so off the water, or enough to be still able to balance on one hull, (maybe even easier to get one hull out of the water) but the pontoons should be like training wheels, rocked back, if you go too far.... (gulp) made for it not to grab the water, but will skim off it; to look good on paper maybe to work like a sea plane pontoon and not a submarine. The prototype should be easily adjustable if you need to shift them up, down, forward, back, angle.

Oh yea... i forgot to say .. i would like a video of your righting technique on this rig....
