1985 H16 main sheet blocks

I recently picked up a 1985 H16. It came with most of a Seaway 5:1 main sheet block setup (2 single boom blocks and one double beam block attached with a swivel to the ratcheting beam block). However the double block is missing.

I was considering replacing the whole thing with a Harken 2640 (40mm) on the boom and a Harken 194 (57mm) on the beam.

Is there a any problem going from two boom blocks to one? Do I need to attach a new block hanger in a new location?

Any thoughts? Should I just replace the lower double with a Harken equivalent?

This boat will be primarily used for recreational sailing.

I highly recommend the new setup you are talking about, you're not really going from 2 upper blocks to 1, you're going from 2 to 3, they're just all in 1 block. It will make for a much more controlled main. It's one of the best improvements I think I've made to my 79' and now comes standard on new boats. I like to have the block on the back boom hanger but have used either, no change or addition required.
I also like the hydrofoils for the bows, you can push the boat a lot harder and are less likely to pitch pole the sucker.

Thanks Buxton. I understand the 2640 is a triple. Was just looking for some opinions before I drop the cash on a new set of Harkens. Sounds like you feel it is a worthwhile upgrade.

I don't know what works best as I still have the old 5:1 system with 2 single blocks on top, but from what I read you want to hook on the back boom hanger.

Thanks for bringing the topic up as I am considering the same for my new to me h16.

Don't mean to highjack the thread but... Buxton, was it noticeable the difference in handling before and after you added the hydrofoils? Thought about them for 14t but never got them since selling it; now thinking want them for 16.

You almost have to have them on a 14, it get buried so easily. I liked them so much on my 14T that I added them to my 16. I do have a set of Hobie aluminum ones but I've made some out of plastic cutting board material and they work great too, cost me about $25.00 for them. I know if you put them on you will be glad you did!

Better hurry up. I think I read recently that Harken has stopped production on the 194.

I had read the same thing but if you look around a number of folks are saying they have them in stock (West Marine, Toresson, Murrays, ...).

I have an '85 that was equipped with the 5 to 1 blocks. The boom had 2 bails (not sure of the spelling), points where the blocks are fastened. I bought a set of used sails with boom and 6 to 1 blocks. There is only one bail on that boom and it is in the same position as the rear bail of the old boom.
