H16 video and a few questions

Hello all, I recently got this boat for free from a friend of my dad in pretty bad shape and have been fixing her up since then. The hulls are airtight now, changed the tramp, painted it, fixed the sails up a bit, made and adjustable alignment rudder system using a windsurf boom cut in half. I'm in Costa Rica so you have to be either resourceful or rich; I'm resourceful.

Anyways I hate just asking questions and not contributing so here's a short vid of my last time out. FYI me and my friend just surfed before this so we know little about the proper way of sailing, I just had a Sunfish like 20 years ago on which I learned the basics.

On this last video the traveler started sticking until it basically fell apart but fortunately stayed in the rail so I need a new traveler if anyone has one for sale or knows how to fix one, maybe with custom nylon bushings.

Also we used an old windsurf harness with no upper back support or butt support which would also slip out of the trap very easily. We do have another option that looks like a 1970s diaper. So if anyone knows of a good trapeze solution that works, is cheap and wont make you feel embarrassed when talking to girls let me know.

Until you get a new traveler, maybe you could fabricate something to hold you over. I read where someone used that white poly cutting board material to machine a new mast tip pulley. Drill out a rivet or two on your track & remove whats left of the broken traveler. Remove (and save) the pins & use the broken part as a pattern. Take the poly cutting board to a buddy w/ a bandsaw, drill press & sander. You can machine that stuff just like wood - or so I've read. Thats what I would attempt if located in an area where parts are scarce.

Yeah sounds like the right material to use. Any suggestion on good cheap harnesses?

I'm kind of interested in the camera setup you used to get those shots.

Sure I can help you with that but I assume that you trapeze so perhaps you can tell me what you use.

What kind/make of camera did you use to capture the video?
How did you secure it to the hull?

I like a Hobie harness, but I'm not sure if it fits your criteria of cheap, and in the case of the half harness, may make you feel embarrassed talking to girls. I prefer a full harness for the back support.

Magic Marine makes a relatively cheap full harness. I have not used one personally so cannot comment on comfort or fit.

A good resource for less expensive after-market options is eBay. There are folks who make some simple belt harnesses that might fit your needs. Search for "sailing harness". Quality is not the same, but you get what you pay for.

Thanks, that looks pretty good. Well the H16 has the anti pitch pole hydro foils (Part#30110). I bought them to well avoid pitchpoling and well I guess they work, hard to say really, I just may be more careful now.

But anyways the camera is a GoPro HD (http://gopro.com/) which comes with these 3M industrial strength adhesive mounts. Some slightly curved for helmets and some flat ones for well flat surfaces. I have the flat ones on each hull on the hydrofoils pointed at slightly different camera angles. I do highly recommend getting the anti fog inserts. I also have one of the curved ones on a skateboard helmet for helmet cam shots. I haven't been able to use the camera much so I only have a few videos with it but here they are.

The videos were recorded in R1 which is the lowest crappiest resolution that the camera can handle (about 848x480). Its basically an SD widescreen resolution but I can get almost 3 hours of footage on an 8GB SD card and it records at 60 frames per second.

I guess once I get a 32GB SD card I can record at 1080.

Any worries about it breaking free of the hull and losing it?

I see also you have anti-pitch poll foils...I have found it challenging to always watch the forward hulls to avoid pitching polling. How do you feel about them? They work as designed? Worth it? How about installation? easy enough?

Actually I have the motorsports edition, I used to race in vintage races so that's what I bought it for.The different GoPro's are all the same, they all come with the housing and 2 rear doors, one for waterproof (less audio) and one for dry (better audio). You always have to use the housing.

You can buy all the attachments separately and they all come with the adhesive mounts so buy the cheapest and buy any extra mounts you may need. For some stupid reason the anti fog inserts don't come with the surf edition so you have to buy them separately.

Yeah some concerns, you can see twice in the hull shots video how the water would bend it down. We tied the camera to the shorter cable going from the hull to the forestay just in case. But those adhesive mounts are really good, if it breaks off its gonna be from somewhere else.

I still watch that lower hull, specially with the chop I sail in but it gives me more peace of mind and well I've totally sunk that leeward hull and it still comes back. It basically makes pitchpoles less sudden, you really have to be pushing it and really ignore what's going on to flip over. I guess the simple answer is that they do work as they buy you some time but you can still flip over with them.


The angle of the hydrofoils is steeper than the angle of the edge of the hulls.

Installation is pretty straightforward, the mast has to be down. The screw that holds the "bow tang" is the same that holds the hydrofoil. It comes with a new longer screw but we used 2 nuts. One for the tang and a 2nd one for the hydrofoil.
