OK, so I've had this H-16 for a couple of years. Have a professional sailor that is supposed to teach me everything. The challenge is he is a retired sailor. Not highly motivated. I can learn it and sail it after I get it on the water. The challenge is rigging it and getting off the trailer. Need some lessons. Are there any videos or anything that will get me on the water?

Can't wait. Hot here in Texas! Thanks for any help.

Get a copy of an assembly manual...not sure, but I think you could probably find one online. Try Google. Depending on where you are in TX, I might be able to give you a hand. I'm no professional, but I've had a H16. Setup isn't too difficult.

Again, depending on where you are you can find lots of Hobie sailors. If you are near Texas City try out this website http://www.tcdyc.com

You can buy an assembly manual for your H16 here for less than $10

https://secure.hobiecat.com/www/sailing/part_manuals.html

Good luck!

You can download it from Hobie for free too:

http://static.hobiecat.com/2010_archive/support/pdfs/H16_Manual.pdf

The pictures aren't that great, but the H14 and H18 manuals I downloaded from them worked just fine for me.

Hobie Dog - where in TX are you located? If you can make it to one of the lakes around Austin I can help you rigg your boat and give you some assitance in case you can generally sail or have sailed other boats before. This weekend seems to suck in terms of wind - will see how the following week looks like.

Hey, you guys are great. I really appreciate it. I live in San Marcos. Closest sailing lake for me is Canyon. I am trying to get the guy I know out next week but we will see. We've had no wind and high heat the last few days.

I'd love to keep in touch though so maybe we can connect.

Thanks again. The Dog

I don't know what is going on. I just went back to the website and had no issues.

Hey Dog, the wind ALWAYS blows @ Canyon Lake! I lived there for a while. There is a REALLY good sandy point (sorry, can't remember the name) where the wind blows onshore most of the time.

As I stated in the original message, the "Pro" isn't highly motivated. I would love to connect with someone that can teach me how to rig this thing and get it wet. I live in San Marcso, TX., so the nearest lake is Canyon. Now we are out of the heat, which is good. Anyone up for a trip to Canyon for a sailing lesson?

Thanks. The Dog

Here is a link to the UK manual which has much better images than the US manual. http://www.hobie-cat.net/download/manuels/hc16.pdf

Also I have an image of how to route the jib sheet if you want I can email it to you if you send me your email address.

Well, I am not from Texas but I would love to help. These boats are pretty easy to rig, my first suggestion would be to rig the boat out in your yard or if that is not an option go to the local park, you will draw lots of attention and you will get to show off your boat. But setting up on dry land lets you get comfortable with the boat and how it will feel. Then once you understand the basics you will not have much trouble on the water.

If you are ever near OKC look me up, I am always up for a sail, unless it is cold!!!! My 14T is not the greatest all weather boat.

Before you step the mast, look up, especially in a yard or at a park. Powerlines have killed or hurt too many people over the years. The boat is easy to rig and there are a lot of people who will help you, but be safe, look up first.

Hobie Dog,

I can't explain how much I miss San Marcos! I spent 7 years there. Make sure you take in the sights at Sewell Park next summer!

I started sailing at Canyon myself. In an earlier post, someone mentioned going to www.tcdyc.com for some help. If that link does not work then try www.texascitydike.com as an alternative. They both go to the same site.

Once you get onto the site, go ahead and register as a user. It is free, and then post your message for help there. Also, there will be a link to "List of Members". Go to it and look for Tomko (second to the last page). John lives at Canyon and might be willing to help you out. He is always extremely busy, but he might be able to let you know if he has some time to help. If not, he might be able to hook you up with someone local to help you. John has been sailing since he was in the womb, so he knows everyone and pretty much has sailed everything that can be sailed.

You might also try te www.catamaran.ws website. This is the local fleet in Austin. They don't have a forum like TCDYC, but you can have a message sent to all of the sailors listed and someone should reply.

I would help you, but I now live in Wichita Falls. I am about 5 1/2 hours away. My crew, I race an 18, still lives in San Marcos. He has never been on a 16, just our 18 and an Inter 20, but he should be able to help you out if he has the time. When you join the TCDYC website, just send me a PM (my username is Wichita Falls Mike) and I will send you his contact information.

Mamacita's... Boy do I miss that place!

Hey all, thanks for the help. I now have downloaded and printed new manuals, have new web sites, and will probably practice in a safe place in the yard first. I really appreciate it. I'm still learning though so don't stop. Maybe someone else will get something out of this as well.

Hobie 18, I've been in San Marcos for 16 years this month. My excersize program is swimming against the current at Sewell Park. Get a good workout physically and enjoy the eye candy. At my age (55) I have to use the old rule though: "Just cause you're on a diet doesn't mean you can't look at the menu"

I will look up Tomko.

Mamacita's... We know several waitresses there. My sons friends and class mates. Enjoy it very much.

Thanks again. The Dog
