Moving the tiller arms

Hi all, I bought my used 1978, 16' Hobi early last month and loving it. I've already put it on it's side and have several black finger nails from getting them caught under the tiller extension. Question- has anyone extended the tiller arms to place the cross bar in front of the main sheet blocks? I find swinging the tiller extension around the blocks on every tack awkward. Has anyone have experience with a self righter as I needed help from a passer by to right my boat.

Just throw the extension behind the boat and let it drag until you are ready to pick it up... It won't hurt it to get a little wet...

The boat design works fine.. Just tighten up the nut at the end of the tiller extension and you will be fine... (not the one at the crossbar )


How are you managing to seriously smash your fingers? Sounds like more than once?

I do like Ron, when it comes time to tack, I through the tiller behind the boat and steer using the crossbar. When I move across, and put my hand on the crossbar on the other side of the mainsheet, at the same time, I push the boom to the new tack with my shoulder. I pick up the tiller as I start to sheet in.

The tillers would have to be VERY long, ahead of the mainsheet to allow full turns. Traveler use outboard would block steering. This also uses trampoline space and makes using a hiking stick nearly impossible. Not a good idea.
