:?:Ok here I go again.
My name is Rich...one of the new guys.
I have disassembled my (78) hobie 16
I purchased it as a 78 and now I find this
CCME11710674..but the sails are 70-74 yellow stripe on white McKibbin sails.
I plan to fill the deck softspots with the prescribed west system
and gell it with Jamestown dist. colored gellcoat .of course after a full strip and fix of any hidden stuff.
this is the boat I traded a Stihl 046 w/20 chain bar for. the boat came with a trailer w/new tires and a junk jetski I promptly sold to help the project.
the sails need cleaning and the jib needs 2 batten pockets repaired other than that its good! OK :) now What year is MY hobie???
and are there any other suggestions??..I will replace the shrouds and mainstay befor I sail it!
Rich from MI.

I'm convinced that the last two digits of the inscribed serial number are the year- thus 1974.

Matt M and Matt B please correct me if I am wrong. It looks to me as though the OP may not have his mainsail pulled all the way up (end of boom is very close to traveller). Or the jib halyard may not be pulled down enough. Or both. Forestay should be very slack when the jib is pulled to the proper tension. Crossing under the boom during a tack or jibe will be tough with the boom so low. Pulling everything up a bit will also pull some of the slack out of the sails. I might be wrong since I don't know the earlier boats so well. Somebody chime in if I am mistaken.

Neither sail is fully hoisted.

Both those sails are very, very tired.

I would think that if he is just planning to sail for the fun of it on local lakes without plans to race, that the sails should be fine, right?

Although, it doesn't take much sailing before you want to race against someone. Learn all you can it about it messing around on the water and have fun. My guess is that you will get 100% hooked and start thinking that a $1000 for new sails is easily worth it, but until then, just enjoy.

You are on the west side of the state, but if you every want to sail on Lake St Clair next summer, let me know. I don't have a trailer, but I do have tired sails so we should be competitive!

 Being a new Guy and all I didnt know the sails were not properly
when I posted the shot...It sailed quite nice there in the garden so I was Happy!
anyhow I have the hulls in the garage for soft spot repair right now and the batten pocket issue will be addressed after x-mas along with the loose stitches.
as for the rest of the sail issues I will enjoy this set as I am fixing my 80 that has good sails next! I feel the next guy can deal with the tired sail issue also.
the curumba sails for the 80 are just stained but still quite tight.
I may go as far as the east coast of the mitten fot a good sailin party
so I will keep the invite in mind..thanks
Rich

I have a place on Harsens Island with a boat ramp we can launch from. It would be fun.

As far as oil stains, I love LestOil cleaner. It cleans up oil on my cloths really well. Another milder detergent to try first would be Dawn dish soap. that stuff is pretty good also.

Good luck!

Sorry Rich. Didn't mean it in a bad way. Just wanted to help if I could. As I said I'm not really that familiar with earlier boats but you may find a hook near the top of your mast on the front. A corresponding swage crimped onto the cable part of your halyard should rest into the hook when your mainsail has been fully hoisted. Some halyards will have another swage a couple feet further down so that the sail can be reefed down a couple panels. After raising the mainsail fully it is time to raise your jib. You want to pull the jib up very tight. This will leave your forestay hanging loose and is normal. Pulling both sails up this way will give you more room under your boom for crossing when you tack and jibe. It will also pull some of the looseness out of the sails. For recreational use the sails should be fine as long as they don't rip.

I started sailing in April on rental boats and bought my 82 in June with rotten hulls. But it got me on the water and got me hooked. Now I'm working on a very solid set of 88 hulls that I bought to replace my rotten and very delaminated pair. Hopefully I'll be back on the water by the first of the year.

LFFRichLaws,

Based on what the other guys said, I’m not sure if you are interested in getting a new or newer set of sails or not. But if you are looking for a newER and in better shape set of sails I have a extra set of “Cat Fever” sails that I’m looking to get rid of. I just dropped them off to be repaired this week, the main had some wear spots and the jib has some minor rodent damage (from the previous owner, not my fault).

In reference to a link posted earlier -

They are the sails in pattern #53 in the year 1981.

I’ll be honest, They aren’t brand new world class racing sails but they are crisp and have good color. They are good for someone looking for a good pair of used sails though. If they weren’t the exact same as what I already have I would keep them, I’d rather buy some other upgrades though.
As long as there aren’t any surprises with the repair costs then I’ll be looking to get 350 out of them.
Also it looks like you are in Hastings, MI. I live and work in the Grand Rapids area and I’m usually headed south once or twice a month to visit family in Indiana, if you end up being interested you don’t have to worry about shipping.
I’ll PM you my info and we can stay in touch if you are interested, if not let’s keep in touch anyways and maybe hit the water someday.

Rich,
No worries, I know exactly what you mean about the holidays being around. I'm not in any hurry to sell these and I told the repairman that so I'm not even sure if they will be done before the holidays. I just wanted to put the bug in your ear.

A guy that I work with hooked me up with the guy who is my doing those sails now, his name is Jerry and he is part of the Crescent Shores Yacht club in Holland and runs UK-Halsey Western Michigan (Sail makers), in comparison to what UK does what I gave to him seems like asking a artist to draw a stick figure, he seemed pretty fair with his estimate though so hopefully at works out at a fair price. PM me if you ever need contact info (that goes for anyone who reads this post). I'll try to remember to post feedback on the results.

We do have some good waters here, there are a lot of cool dudes that sail too, just moved up here from Northern Indiana so I'm excited to meet some new people and get out on the water.

Take care,

Cesar
