New Non-Skid?

I searched the forum for this and did not really find an answer.

Well, I finally got the delam fixed in the hull tops and am looking at the mess I made dripping and running epoxy over the non-skid in several areas.

As I am going to paint the tops (and gel the hulls) I am thinking the new paint will fill in the grip tread on the hull tops.

Am I better off sanding it smooth and use (WHAT) to re-create a non-skid surface on the hull edges?

Yes the question is what to use to create the non-skid. Grip Tape is expensive, sand in the paint is tacky (tacky, not sticky) is there a better solution? or just leave it smooth?

Interlux has a product called Intergrip, a "no skid compound" according to the label on the can. I used it on the cockpit of my Catboat (not catamaran) and was extremely satisfied with it. I don't know how it would work on the Hobie hulls but don't see why it wouldn't. Maybe someone else has tried it on a Hobie. Before that I had non skid strips on the cockpit floor that peeled off and were more trouble than they were worth.

Thanks, that was quite the interesting read. Way to complex for my first Hobie rebuild. If this thing / latest infatuation / turns into anything, I will experiment with this method.

The problem being::: I fixed the delamination with epoxy and gelcoat, as I have been told will not stick to epoxy.

Need to find another medium. Will look at intergrip and I heard of a product from Australia that's supposed to be pretty cool.

Generally, there is no one on the front hulls. Unless it was my girls when the were little. They would lay on the hulls and paddle us along whether we needed to or not.

One day I heard a strange humming sound that I had never heard while sailing a Hobie 16. They were taking a wet hand and rubbing the bridle wires. The vibration was traveling all through the rigging and the mast.

Paint it.

I bought this boat a year ago and just getting around to fixing it. My entire Hobie experience was on a Getaway at the Charlotte Harbor Sailing Center, cannot wait to get this one out.

I should mention that when I used the Intergrip on my Catboat that I used quite a bit less than the instructions called for. It is a very fine material, not at all like sand.

As to whether you need it, I think you will find that there is always some reason to get on the front of the hull whether it is coming up to a dock or climbing out of the water after a capsize. My daughter has also paddled us in lying on the front hull but she was 25 years old at the time.

Since you are new to the H-16 be warned that it is addictive. I have owned mine for 26 years and can't wait for the start of the sailing season.
