The Hobie Cat I oicked up came with the the solo righting kit. The previous owner tried to explain to me how it works but it didn't make much sense to me. Are there written instructions I can get for this?

Neither really. He mentioned something about disconnecting the shroud or a line connected to the shroud and a rope that runs under the tramp. Thats it.

Triggs,

Ahhh Ha!!! The old shroud extender trick. This allows you to extend the length of the shroud on the dry side of the boat so the angle of the boat can be changed (top hull leaning closer to the water) giving you greater righting leverage. Hope you understood what I just said because I didn't.

Happy Sailing

David

On page 1 of this link: http://www.hobiecat.com/support/pdfs/06_12-13.pdf check out the Upright Solo Righting System. I think that must be what you have. Then let us know if it works. :)

I used to have one of these on my other boat. It worked great!

When the boat flips on it side, pull the pin out of stay on the hull that's out of the water. This lengthens that stay by about 12-18" and causes the dry hull to move back towards you (assuming that you are standing on the lower hull.

After that you simply grab the righting line pull it over the top hull and hold on and lean back. The boat will be able to right with only 180 lb person using this method.

Once the boat is back upright turn it so that the wind pushes on the mast and the elongated stay is on the leeward side. This way the wind does the work and it takes very little effort to "shorten" the stay back into position and put the pin back in.....
:D

Does anyone have a diagram or pics with measurements of how the shroud extender system is rigged??

How long a section of cable with nico-press thimbles etc?

thanks!
Im still doing plastic surgery to my H16. Will post pics whenever I finish the great undertaking. Front pylon losse (was), new tramsoms gudgeon backing plates, fairing, new gelcoat hulls and deck. Etc!

If we are talking about the same system there is a pic here: http://www.sunjammers.com/item/view/85

If memory serves me these short lines with loops on each end are attached on each side as follows:

One end is attached to the shroud adjuster in a hole just below your normal hole for your stay. The other end of this small line has a bow clamp thru it. (see the pic on the right) This bow clamp should then be clamped around your stay up above so that you should be able to slide it up and down your stay freely. The quick release pin holds your stay in the shroud adjuster.

Once you pull the quick release pin the stay slides thru the bow clamp until it catchs at the nicopress thimble becuase the bow clamp is too small to allow the end to pull thru. Your stay is now about 18" longer. The rest is the normal righting procedure.

I don't have one anymore (it went along with the boat) but I am pretty sure they only lengthed it 18". If you go too long the mast will be leaning too far and it may want to go back over by itself.

Once the boat is upright, turn the boat so that the wind pushes the mast back towards that side and helps you pull the stay back down and put the quick release pin back into the shroud adjuster ... then your off again! :P
