Buying used sails

Looking to replace my 1977 sails with something newer. Buying brand new ones are out of my budget. Anybody can give any advise when looking for the used sails?

Try intensitysails.com. I sail a 1979 Hobie 16 and was considering getting a main and jib from them to replace my old sails last year. I believe the newer jibs are cut slightly differently now than the older ones, and that concerned me a little bit. Also, my wife said she would miss that red panel that we have near the top on the main, so I had both the main and the jib re-worked. I often wonder if I made the right decision. A new set of Hobie 16 sails from Intensity Sails for a few hundred dollare sounds appealing.

Older sails on hobie 16's will tear here. It is best to repair the rip before it grows. This will require about $6 in sewing supplies and fabric, and less than 2 hours of your time. If you have a heavy duty sewing machine it will go a lot faster. There are videos and instructions on the internet.

The overall condition of the fabric and stitching should be the biggest determining factor when buying old sails.

Thanks. No I do not have a heavy duty sewing machine. But was wondering approximately how much would it cost to have it repaired by a professional?

Buddy of mine had his sails reconditioned here at Rooke Sails. New bolt rope completely and various repairs over main and jib and believe he said all was around $300. Sailcare does an amazing job at making older sails fresh and crisp as well as repairs too. If you're not looking to go highend there are aftermarket sails from SLO ect that are very nice and inexpensive however you wont be able to get the fantastic colours that hobie offers.
