I inherited a H 16 and have some questions.... The rig is shabby and most hardware at base of mast is in need of replacement. I have sailed her hard and with jury rigs all seems ok, but I want to get her back to the ease of rigging as when new. I have a problem getting nubs on the halyard to pass thru the sheave. Why are there 2? Should they slide up the mast inside the sail track or outside? (top is in, bottom is out). Lets start with this....thanks. So far, I tie off the main halyard as opposed to hooking the nub at the mast top.

There are two ferrules on the main halyard because earlier boats and sails had reef points. The upper one was to allow for the sail to be raised only partway and tied around the boom to reduce sail area and depower. My 80's boat is similar toy yours, 1 in and 1 out. Check and make sure the sheave at the mast head runs freely. DON"T tie the main halyard off- lock it using the ferrules and fork at the top of the mast!!!!! The cleats on the mast were never intended to carry that load.

Yes, they are the meant to hold the halyard, and therefore the mail sail, in place as the ferrule is caught by the prongs of the fork near the top of the leading edge of the mast. Sometimes the halyard is easier to pull through if you stand forward of the mast as you pull the last couple of feet. Also, inspect the halyard wire and look for kinks or frayed sections. Lastly, one of the older Hobie instructional books (Hobie Cat Sailing-New Revised edition, 1982, pg.107) recommends that you spray some silicone onto the luff/bolt rope to make raising the sail easier and to extend the life of your mainsail. I did this during some recent down-time the the sail flies up the mast, now.
