trapeze set up

Hi guys. I have a 40 years old Hobie and I have been sailing it for to years now. I feel comfortable with it already and I am ready to try the next step. It came with two trapeze wires but I dont know how to use them. I ve searched all over the internet but I couldnt find detailed drawings or pictures. So my question is does any body have a scheme of how you do it? Where do you attach it on the mast? I have only one hole for the rigging on my mast. Where goes the other end? I need some sort of straps right? Where to get these straps? Do the straps attach to the wire by a hook or somewhat? How am I not going to drown attached to the wire if the boat capsize? When not used the trapeze is attached to the trampoline, how? If you could post a picture with all these I will appreciate it.

Also if there are some alternatives to the hobie local dealer I would be happy to hear it, because where I live I only have ebay and what I make with my own hands

Well I'm at the same stage as you, being new to the trapeze, but here is what I'm doing...

My Hobie came with the trap wires connected to the mast tang. They are in the same shackle as the shrouds and forestay I believe. I can check tonight, or someone else here will probably confirm or deny this.

As for the connecting to the trap wire, there are several setups possible, but generally I think the harness hook connects into a ring or metal dogbone. There is a piece of shockcord that runs under the tramp connecting the two trap wires and allowing them to move as needed.

I don't actually know how the adjusting of the dogbone position/length should work, so hopefully someone can enlighten us on that...

Thank you! And what is a "trap" ? These straps around my waste or what? And where can I get all of these? Is there an alternative of what a hobie store can offer? The only thing I have are the wired Oh, and only one has a handle, but it is made of wood and it is 40 years old, so I think it wont last a minute

Well, not quite since he has the original, one-hole tang - the manual has the modern three-hole tang.

If you've just got the two wires (crew trapeze only), then you put the eyes of the wires on the bow of the same shackle used for the shrouds and forestay.

If you end up with two trapezes (skipper and crew), then the skipper's trapeze wire eyes go on the pin of the shackle with the tang in between them. Kind of like this:

I was just shortening trapeze to "trap." You can google Hobie harness to find various harness options, I'm also in the market for a new harness... they seem to run $100-$200.

I don't think the handle is too important, but mine are simply 1/2inch aluminum tubing with holes drilled for the trapeze wire to go through. Maybe post a picture of what you have if you need more direction.

I have what is in this picture. Thank you! now I know that I have to put them on the pin of the shackle. I thought before it has to be attached the same way as the rigging and then they will mess with each other.

Here is a pic of my loaded shackle.
The second pic shows another shackle on my main trapeze wire (near bottom of the pic). I'm assuming that is for connecting a second trapeze wire for crew??
The third shows my dog bone for the harness, but I don't know where that rope is supposed to go?

Those trapeze wires are in tough shape. I highly recommend you replace them - and the adjustment rope at the bottom. The only thing I would keep is the dogbone.

Think about it - you're hanging over the side of the boat, entrusting yourself (and your boat) to a wire, a bit of line and a rope stopper. Being cheap in this instance can be very, very expensive.

Where are you guys located? Maybe someone close can come give you a hand getting this setup.
Its worth figuring out...its the best "seat" on the boat!

I'm not sure where you are going to use a carabiner, but I would advise against it. Look at the assembly manual, and google "hobie trapeze" images to see how the system is used. Whatever system you use must NOT have an attachment to the wire that requires unfastening to release (like a carabiner). My harness has an open hook in the front that goes into the "dog bone". An alternative to the dog bone is a cable loop with a spreader piece. And I want to repeat, you must not be fastened to the trapeze wire!
