Hi, I just bought a Hobie cat 16 this year and i have learned the basics but, i think i have everything down except tacking. Today I was sailing with the main sail only going up wind, I had a good amount of momentum and i went to tack. i made it about half way through and then i was stuck with the wind directly in front of me. I tried moving my rudder to turn but it just wasn't working. I couldn't gat my boat to turn so i had to hop in the water and turn it that way. I have had this problem many times before and i am just looking for beginner tips.

You NEED the jib to tack a Hobie 16.

Tacking FAQ: https://www.hobie.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=60322

Quote:
With a Jib - Keep up the boat speed into the tack. Steer lightly when starting the tack and then hard over as the boat slows (Steer 3/4 of full over. Too hard and the rudders act as brakes). Look for a swell or chop to "bank" off of. You can bump a swell as the boat just goes past head to wind if possible. That can help push the bows around. Sheet harder as you come closer to head to wind. Keep the jib sheeted... when the jib back-winds... release the mainsheet and force the sheet out by several feet, otherwise the boat can weather vane into the wind. Keep your weight well aft and hiking right through the tack until the main sail nearly backwinds before trying to cross over. Keep the steering consistent. Try to keep the helm over even when switching sides. If you stall, reverse the rudders as the boat begins to back up and be sure the sheets are well out. Allow the boat to come well onto the new tack before beginning to sheet again... Once the main starts to fill on the new tack, release the jib and sheet it on the new tack side. Sheet in the main slowly at first to get some boat speed and steerage, then sheet harder and head up onto the new tack.

Learn how to do a "K" turn.

When the boat goes into irons, move yourself to the new side of the boat, release the mainsheet and physically push the boom all the way out (and hold it there). At the same time, push your rudders away from you (and hold them there).

The boat will start sailing backwards and the bow will turn away from the wind.

Once the boat is on a close reach heading, pull the rudder towards yourself and sheet in to sail away on the new tack.

It takes some practice, but once you figure out this technique, you will be able to get out of irons easily in just about all conditions, jib or no jib.

Sail with your jib as well. Even when your solo. Try to be very slow switching the jib to the other side. Let it back wind for a few seconds until you are pointed in the correct direction, then switch it over.
My process to tack is
let about 2-3 feet of main sheet out. (To allow turning without loosing momentum and let you go under boom)
Turn the rudders.(keep rudders turned and do not shake the tiller, in light winds that alone could kill the tack)
Keep jib on original side until pointed in the new direction of wanted travel.
Start pulling main in evenly and simultaneously move jib (tighten jib quickly and steadily, not jerky)
