Line Catcher

Does anyone use something similar to the Line Catcher in the Murrays catalog? The description says in prevents the mainsheet from falling into the gaps in the lacing. I found my mainsheet doing this on Saturday when I went out in a 2 metre swell. I think it was the water coming aboard that kept sweeping the mainsheet into the lacing or off the back of the boat. I kinda ran out of hands, what with steering, holding the mainsheet, pulling the mainsheet back on board as well as pulling my crew back on board when he got swept of the side of the boat when trapezing with a wave. (As you can see, I'm still a newbie)!

Do these things work and are they worth their money?

I have a paddle that I keep in my laces and the blade keeps the lines out for the most part. I think I would try to weave something in there then spend fifty bucks on something and have to take my tramp off to put it on. My problem is not the sheet falling through the laces, it's just falling off the back side of the tramp. I usually sail pretty close hauled, so I've got a bunch of line laying around. When I'm out on the wire it's always falling off the back. I think it is the only thing that remotely bothers me when I sail.

I think you can weave the Line Catcher in your lacings without removing your tramp. My mainsheet is not falling through the laces - the water that comes up through the laces is washing my mainsheet off the back of the boat. Would this thing work or something similar?

I know I'm getting off the topic here but you raised two other interesting points:

I've another post elsewhere on this forum about padddles and storage - do you store your paddle on top of the tramp or underneath your tramp? If you store the paddle on top, how do you keep the mainsheet from fouling in it?

I'm new to being a skipper on the wire and found that I had this problem too. Is there anyway of keeping the mainsheet out of the water when you're out on the wire or is it just a fact of life?

I went to Home depot, bought a length of rubber kick panel, cut it to fit and presto "for under $8.00.

We used to use lawn/beach chair webbing. It's light, cheap, and mesh so water and wind will blow through.

Two solutions to the main sheet falling off the boat. Have the crew hold a loop, enough to allow sheeting out, and if it is blasted off the back, the crew will know to pull it back on board without a word.

Another option is to hold it yourself with your toes. Why do you think O'Neill makes those split toe booties?

Try ebay. Their is a guy on there who sells Amish made products. I bought a mesh rope catch and it works pretty well. I think it cost me $15 and 5 to ship. He usually has some on there. If not email him and he'll add them. His name is Hobie_llc I believe.

Dang, those Amish are sure busy, and they must love Hobie sailing!! I just wonder if they twist up that 1/2" line they're selling as 'mainsheet' by hand??

Oh, and a lot of guys lace their righting line up in the tramp lacing. That way you're using gear that's already on your boat. Cost=free, because you should have a righting line already.

As far as putting my paddle in my laces. The paddle sits on top of the tramp with the paddle part aft and slide the paddle part over under and over the laces and take the top end of the paddle and slid it under the laces about a foot back from the mast base. The mainsheet never really gets caught up in it. Also, when I'm trapped out I sometimes put the extra line under my foot on the side rail, but that works poorly as well. I wish there could be one of those dog leash type line retrivers that could be at the back of tramp.

You explain things very well - I'll try that when we go out next. I guess putting the paddle in as you describe it means the broad paddle bit is far enough aft so as to be out of the way of the gibsheet too.

Now I like your idea about the rope retrievers. I'm going to keep thinking along that line and will let you all know if (big IF) I come up with something. Thanks again everyone for your help.
