vin number on my trailer

i bought my hobie from a friend and the trailer has no plates. It had been sitting for so long he has no clue where the plates went or what they were. The DMV said i need to find the vin on it. I have a highlander trailer and i cant find the vin. Any ideas?

Try registering it as a "home built" trailer. In Minnesota you have to a fill out a page describing what you have into it, and what you paid. So they can tax you on it, again. I had to do it with my last trailer, it came from Iowa where trailers of that class aren't titled.

Do you think i could stamp a vin into it myself and use that?

Minnesota issues a sticker that has a vin on it when you apply for a home built title. The sticker goes onto the tounge I'd don't know what California does. I'd have to imagine they do something similar.

I know in Indiana you can register for a VIN if you can prove to the state that your trailer does not have one. It's a light pain since you have to wait for a state trooper to come and look at your trailer.

I had to apply in indiana.
1st - applied with the dmv for a new vin.
2nd - had a new vin plate made at "things remembered" (engraving store) with the number the state supplied
3rd - riveted the vin plate to the trailer
4th - had the sheriff come to my house to verify that it was legit and fill out the asociated paperwork
5th - went back to dmv with paperwork an viola, new plate for trailer!

Perfect. Thanks guys ill try that. Another question. Are all the dmv's in the country as slow as the ones in california? Ill be gone for at least 3 hours to sort this out at the dmv.

Our DMV has gotten better in Michigan, but half of the people moved out of state to find a job and the other quarter are unemployed with no money for plates. Thank You Auntie Jennifer Grandholm.

The DMV's in Mass (at least on the North side of Boston) are great. I have never spent more than hald an hour in one. This includes everything from getting a new license and registering my are and my boat. The only negative was they didn't accept debit or credit cards at the time I was there.

California DMV will give you nothing but trouble if you can't find any paperwork on it, or can't find a VIN. My suggestion would be to go to Mainetrailer.com. They will help you register the trailer in Maine, and send you plates and documentation that will at least get you on the road.
