Is there a way to determine the year of a Hobie 16 outside of documentation? Perhaps by serial number?

That's not going to help him since he's got a pre-1973 boat.

Hobie 16 was introduced in 1971, so there's only two possibilities.

1971
1972

From the number you provided in your other post (2000+), I'd lean towards 1972.

OK... I give up. How did you know he had a pre-1973 16? I guess I missed his "other" post.

Just look on the transom. 3rd and 2nd to last digits are model year.

Oh man, this is a dream come true, thanks to Hobie for making it easy, and thanks to you guys for the quick responses to a question I should have searched for.

No worries... I really did think I'd missed another post. It's the busy season, especially with Memorial Day and everyone trying to get last minute parts delivered (though thankfully I've actually had time to eat sitting down today). So I'm doing real quick drive-bys on the various forums, and could have easily missed something.
