Hobie 16 New Vs. Old

Hey guys im starting up this post to find out what are some of the advantages and disadvantages of owning a older hobie and what the differences between them are feel free to dump all your knowledge out on this post any info is much appreciated my main concern is weight any tips on how to make my 82 go faster would be great. Thanks!

You need lots of time. Time on the boat. Time studying tuning manuals. And time gleaning tips directly from the guys who are going faster.

that is exactlly right. i brand new boat can only do so much. my advice is to take a racing clinic if you want to go fast.

1979 Hobie 16

I bought a new 16 during the winter and absoultly love it. The reason I bought it was because I had an 81 H16 sail#62590 that was very good shape, solid hulls without damage on the bottoms. It was however time to upgrade all the rigging as it was original, and the sails being original were good shape but basically rags. I decided to go new instead of putting money into the older boat. I will say that there is not $7500.00 worth of performance difference between the boats. The new boat seems to be a bit faster, especially in light air and more solid but I have not had it up against another 16 this year. (we need more cats on our local lake!) So if you have the money to spend I would go new as it is an investment that should last another 20 years at least. If money is a bit tight stay with the older boat and with experience you will be right in the thick of it with the newer boats.
