Bummer! Main Halyard

I forgot to secure my main halyard after sailing this weekend, and by the time I noticed what was happening, the halyard had run through the pulley. What's the best way to retrieve the end? Drop the mast?

Just tip the boat on it side on the beach. It's easy if you have two people. I don't know that I'd do it by myself, but I'm scrawny. I've gotten quite good at forgetting to run the spin halyard on my FX-one and having to tip that over.

make sure you run it the correct way, back to front! Nothing worse that getting the boat flipped back up just to realize you've done it backwards.

You should be able to flip the 16 easily by yourself. I can flip my 5.2 alone and retrieve my halyard.

Thanks! I never would have thought to tip the boat on its side. I'm glad to find out that I'm not the first person this has happened to!

Here is what works for me to tip the boat:

With crew - One person lifts a pontoon at the shroud, and the other stands on the opposite pontoon and hangs back on the shroud, then walks back onto the beach, pulling on the shroud. Lay the masthead on a towel, etc. to keep the sand off.

Solo - Undo a trap, and walk out as far as possible, then reel it in.


Righting - Lift the mast at the tang, and go hand over hand along the shroud. By the time you get to the pontoon, it will be pulling up. Gingerly step onto the hull and bring it in for a safe landing. Watch your rudders!!!

Anybody do it differently?

Better and safer with more people.
Volunteer some bystanders, but give them clear instructions.

NEVER stand on the sides of the hulls on dry land. Hobies are NOT built to take stresses like that.

We have tipped H16's and H18's in our club parking lot, but we always use old car tyres to cushion the sides of the hulls as they roll onto the dirt. No sense in putting a rock through the side of the boat.

We have also tipped Hobies in 18" - 24" of water on the beach. Again, we used old tyres on the sides. Going back vertical was easier too.

Only a few weeks of sailing left.
