Huh, what is the thought on this boat from you Hobie guys.

I hate to say it and I am sure that hobie doesn't like to hear it but that boat looks cool. I mean the Hobie 16 is the classic beach cat and is what most people will think of for years to come when they hear the word catamaran.

But I know this is being used as a youth boat, and to draw youth in you need the coolest looking and most adult looking boat out there. And that boat is it. It is basically just a small high tech boat.

The negative points are that I think it rates slower than the Hobie 16. And there are not thousands of used ones setting around to be scooped up by some college kid cheap.

I'm not attempting to promote this boat. I've sailed with them before and personally, I'm wasn't impressed. The only thing I envied was the spin and the square-top. Also, it would be cheaper to buy a Tiger than one of these. By the way, I want to add at least one of these items my boat this year, just for fun. It'll probably be the square-top.

The don't lool that impressive but they do look like the big boy's boats and that draws younger guys in.

It seems like no one is very impressed with the SL.

I think they are very ugly myself. I don't think our Hobie 16's are in any danger.

I believe that if Hobie wanted something similar to the SL all they would have to do is add a spin to a Getaway. That being said, the cost v performance issue is easily won by the Hobie 16.

I like the analogy of 16 and "classic". One thing that goes along with this classic is simplisity. SL is too complicated. As stated may as well have a F18.

Another thing, France is in it's own league regarding catamaran sailing and racing. This was a champions event? The amount of spectators on the beach puts our Tybee 500 to shame. If SL can survive off the French fleet so be it. Don't plan on it being an international boat or replacing the Hobie 16.

That "classic" 16 is still the best stepping stone for you college aged sailors to get into big fleets and learn to race while waiting for the price of used F18's to become affordable.

the SL16 did more to hurt the youth sailing in this country than it did to help. When Art Stevens pushed for this boat to be "the boat" in the US it all went down hill. Its a cool looking boat but the H16 needs to be the main stay much like Optis are in dingy sailing. Add a spin to the H16 if you feel a spin in a must, and someone can get a race ready boat w/spin for under 5K

the SL looks to me like a bigger version of the Hobie Wave.

Looks like it is much lighter and rides a bit higher in the water, though it doesn't look any faster than a H16.

Oh, it does look like the wave with alot more toys added on. That shouldn't offend you and we should support this boat.

One of the biggest problems with cat sailing now days is the attitude that is being displayed by a few here. If it has sailing, and especially if it is a cat then we should be all for it no matter what it is. I could understand Hobie not supporting the boat personally because it isn't theirs but we as sailors should.

"we"? Vernon, I think you've forgotten which forum you're on right now. See the trademarked name at the top of your screen? It says Hobie. The SL is made by Performance Catamarans (i.e. NACRA) come to think of it so is your 5.2

Well, if you'd like all of us younger catsailors (ie: the future of YOUR and OUR sport) to leave, step right up and say it. It's attitudes like yours that have pissed off so many people and made them leave the sport.
Do your homework, gree owns a hobie as well. So do I.
Trying to divide catsailors based on what boat they own will only accelerate the demise of catsailing as a whole here in the US. Why don't you try to be a part of the bigger picture?
