Less than an inch. Probably about 5/8"

There should be a foam plug below it with a thin metal plate on top of it w/ sealant to make the mast water tight.

thanks for the info... i was checking my mast for leaks and was wondering how this end was sealed.... here is a pic of my test method...
i found a rivet hole (that went all the way into the mast).. and used a compressor with a attachment to fill a football (wrapped in a bit duct tape) forced some air into the mast and checked for leaks... the mast held pressure and i couldn't hear any air escaping....[img][img]http://img188.imagevenue.com/loc532/th_97493_no-leak_122_532lo.jpg[/img][/img]

Be careful how much air pressure you subject the mast to.

If the boat was turtled in salt water (a more severe test than fresh, since salt water is denser), the static pressure at the head of the mast would only be approximately 11.6 psi.

10 psi is the max I would put on your system. The soap bubble test is better than listening for air escaping.

Cool method! I use a schrader valve threaded into one of the rivet holes and limit it to 3 lbs. All you want to do is create bubbles, which takes very little pressure.

I did pump a beater mast up to 60psi one time. I got scared and backed off.

I pumped a beater Getaway hull up to 90psi one time. It got twice the size, I got scared and backed off again. It settled back into its original shape with no sign of damage. I like making videos!

when i was putting the air in i was careful to use a minimum amount of pressure .... do you think i should seal up the lower rivet hole or leave it open ????
