Welcome to an open discussion of Hobie Cat parts and their availability. As we transition back to Hobie factory production of Hobie Catamarans there will be a challenge as to availability in some cases. Many parts have been discontinued over the years as older models are no longer in production. This area can help sailors find parts sources and keep informed as to the current status and availability. Share your Hobie needs and desires for specific parts and accessories to help Hobie focus on what is needed.

Matt, Thanks for starting this discussion. I am just keen to understand when parts especially and new boats (Getaways) might start to flow through to Australia. I am struggling to keep a fleet of these going with few if any parts available down here. Some timelines would be really helpful if you have anything concrete. Thanks.

Matt, Thanks not the news I wanted to hear but the most information I have heard in a long time. At least we are starting to go into our winter which will see our boats used less which hopefully means less maintenance needs and parts requirements.

I just bought a 1987 Hobie 17 and have found, in the midst of my fix-up project that the rear (aluminum) crossbar is cracked around the hole that the bolt passes through to fix it to the hull. It actually looks like it's already been repaired on both ends previously. I can't tell if the current cracks occurred after the original repairs. Is this fixable? How? With a sleeve? I've read aluminum welds are not very strong. If not fixable, are there used rear crossbars out there? I've been searching the web, and haven't run onto one. Thanks for any and all input.

Your post should probably be moved to the Hobie 17 forum.

But to answer your question, cracks in the crossbars on Hobie 17s are not terribly uncommon but may be fixable. The size of the stainless steel backing plate on the inside of the crossbar was increased by Hobie to help spread the load around that mounting point. Your 1987 boat probably has the smaller plates (about 1” square).

I have reinforced H17 crossbars in the past. The best way is if you can find a scrapped donor crossbar and cut a piece out of that. Otherwise use a piece of flat aluminum, which you will need to bend to shape. Basically you want a sheet about 4-5” long and 3” wide, roughly 0.080” thick to double up the inside wall of the crossbar. You’ll need to bend it in a bench vice to roughly match the shape inside the crossbar. Remove the stainless backing plate, fit your doubler piece inside the crossbar, and then re-attach the stainless plate. Then you should also rivet the doubler to the existing crossbar an inch or so from each end. You’ll have to use countersunk rivets so they don’t contact the hull. If you do this in addition to welding the crack, I think the crossbar should be ok.

The factory has been building CompTips for months. Get an order to a dealer.

I would like to see more Getaway parts become available, I have noticed on almost every site there has been a shortage or out of stock of items. I for one am looking for a Getaway Base Mast. I contacted someone at Hobie and they estimated 3 weeks, I hope that is the case, he couldn't be completely sure, but I am missing precious time on the water... :(
