Hobie Cat 14 Power

Don't know, if we had this one already here.

Hobie Europe introduced in 2007 a new variation of the Hobie Cat 14.

Other than the sail and boom, what the difference between that and the POS I sail?

We (in the US) have no desire to "upgrade" our boats with a sail and boom that would cost more than most of us paid for our boats in the first place.

It's not class legal so it isn't going to fly - ISAF will shoot it down in a heartbeat.

I saw this a few months ago and really was hoping it owuld show up here. Or at least new 14's would be made here in the states.

Sometimes the best things are the old things. We had a regatta last weekend, and the 14 set up from trailer to water in like 12 min. The couple with the tiger and our FXOne Boy look quite a bit longer than that.

I read on another page that they added the mast rotation system of the Hobie Tiger, plus a new in the rear crossbeam integrated traveller and the other stuff of the race edition.



, that's what I thought too.
Anyway, the boat design is nearly 40 years old and still being produced and updated.




Who cares, speed matters .
There where I live aren't many Hobies around, and surely no official regattas .

Now I would have thought that the new 14s being produced everywhere ELSE, would have the integrated rear crossbar track. I just assumed that when the started doing that with the 16 that the 14 would have that too. Is that not true?
I still don't understand the difference between that power thing and the regular old 14. Are you telling me that square top sail and tiny boom will make it so different that it is called 'power'?

Couldn't you cut down a newer 16 rear crossbar and make it work? It would take a bit of machining I would think, but nothing too over the top.

Oh, and it took longer than 12min, it was more like 13min. Jeez, you always have to blow things out of proportion. Just means I have another hour and seventeen minutes to "contemplate" my losing stategery for the day.

I am glad to see such an improvement on a 14 .
A square top mainsail is a performance part that might make the legendary 14 sail better if not faster .

When in 2000 people made a new sailplan with square top main for the olympic TORNADO was a revolution ,with max speed 33+ knots!

I would never bought this main for my 14 ,but I like it!

Hey guys.
I am sailing in Germany. We have arround 40 14s here in my area.
Since some years we discuss about new equipment for the 14, because young sailor are leaving us after 2 years of sailing the 14. The go to sail bigger and faster boats. The most of us are thinking that the 14 has to be more "sexy"!
In April I bought the POWER-SAIL, but it was to small and I sent it back to Hobie Cat France.
In July I got a POWER-SAIL with the original Hobie14-Size.
Since July I just could sail 2 regattas and in one of the regattas there was no wind. So I just had one chance to check the sail in a race against the old sail.
Of course the sail is not class legal, but the other sailors were interested in the sail too and would like to see it in a regatta. So they promised to do no protests against me.
The POWER-SAIL is faster in all upwind-corses. But theres is a little problem with the material. It is very fix. (...sorry, I don't know a better english word for it.)
So if you do a mistake, you loose speed very quick. You need experience with this sail. If you have enough experience, you wil be very very fast.
In the down-wind course the old sail is a little bit faster. Maybe it would be good to cross on the downwind. For me it was not possible, because the lake where we sailed was to slim.
For the POWER-SAIL you need a mast-controller, because the mast-ratation has to be 50% more to the middle. Without this tuning you get no power into the rigg.
I bought the POWER-SAIL for 1.160,--€. ...with boom and battens!
For sailors in the US it is expensive because of the high €-course.
But here in Europe it is not expensive. Without boom and battens the sail would be cheap as a white old sail.
I Germany it is getting to cold now. So there will be no sailing for a while.
