Post subject:  Getting an '81 H14 ready to sail - straps or trap..or both?

I was an H16 solo sailor in the day and remember having fun with the trap, but not many memories of using the hiking straps. These days, an H16 would be too much for me to solo, so I found a reasonably priced H14 toy for some "go-fast" sailing (I have a 14' dinghy toy for go-slow "dry" sailing). Not surprisingly, the hiking straps are long gone. So I have a decision to make on whether to spend money on replacing the straps, and/or spend on installing a dolphin striker and setting up trap wires. Are straps enough to get out in 12 to 15 winds? If I set up for trap, is there any need for the straps? Would having both get me a wider wind range...really?

Tnx...

Hi, I just purchased an H14 as well. The owner went to H14 worlds a few times and on this boat he ran a rope through the tramp gromments and put piece of hose and pool noodles. It looks terrible but way cheaper than new straps and more functional.

I was out two days last week in 10-12 wind with gusts in the mid 20's and only used hiking straps while flying the hull in the gusts.
I'm 6'-0" and approx 200#

I had new toe straps (2" webbing) sewn by a local awning company to replace the originals that were also sewn on. Spent maybe $100 or so.

Not much enthusiasm for trapeze sailing for the H14 (non-turbo) so far. I found a few forum opinions from a while back on H14 trap sailing:

"no you don't need them (traps on H14).... i sailed mine for many years w/o them and gone plenty fast"
and
"Although guys do trapeze from the 14... standing WAY aft." (sailing position can be a challenge)

Is that the general idea on this?

I think having both would afford you the opportunity and a wider range of use depending on the conditions and location.
Until recently I did not have a harness and at our inland lake, the sustained winds are rarely over 10-12 mph and so far the trap has not been a priority. I am looking forward to a trip to the coast to give the trapeze a real shot though. After all, it is a beach cat!

It looks like there were some "hidden" discussions of this in a thread about telltales... These three posts seem to recommend traps and one is worried about straps...

You will want hiking straps regardless. Even if you have a trapeze, there will still be situations when you are sitting on the tramp and want to lock yourself onto the boat either so you can hike out, or to prevent sliding if the boat pitches.

A trapeze on a 14 can certainly be used, but the wind needs to be relatively steady and if you are a large person (over about 180 lbs), you will need a fair amount of wind before you can get out on the trap.

Bottom line, both have their place and having one does not exclude having the other.

I agree: having both is the way to go. When trapping, you will need a tighter rig. Follow some guy's tuning guide.

Looks like I should start with the tramp straps. I'll need to put on the trap wires once I collect the parts. I'm just starting to get the H14 ready to sail. Needing to do some shore launch efforts before getting it in the water. I'll start another thread for the setup. Probably nothing new, but hopefully of some interest...
