Oil stains on sail

Does anyone have any suggestions for removing oil stains from sails. Apparently an oil container had at some stage been left on my spare sail and left a foot square solid stain.
This will be a great lesson to me, but you know what it is like with limited shed space.

Try a very mild detergent to soak the stain. Do they sell Woolite in Oz?

The reason Woolite makes things look whiter? It glows in UV light:

I think another factor to consider is how easily a detergent rinses out. If you don't get it completely out of the material, it tends to attract and hold more dirt.

Did not know about Woolite's UV properties... That's pretty funny.

It's actually true for a lot of detergents. That photo came from an Army web site that cautioned soldiers to be careful what detergent they used when washing their uniforms.

Camoflage isn't much use when you're lit up like a glowstick.

That's actually really interesting. Another tidbit for when the housing economy makes me turn to a life of crime.
