Mast Step Ball Lubricant

On days when the wind is variable and lite, my mast tends to swivel on the ball a lot. When it does, it tends to make a loud squeaking noise. Is there some sort of lubricant I should be using? Thanks!

Small dab of automotive bearing grease up inside the socket of the mast base.

Yeah I just throw some automotive grease onto the ball but need to do it each time I rig the boat. Would this spray negate the need to do it each time?

Secondly, I only had this problem when I replaced the the ball and mast base. First time it happened, it actually ground away some of the ball as well, but we had been sailing for a couple of hours before it started, so I am at a loss as to what cause it. Had it been sand or similar, it should have started making the noise straight away. Weird.

Been using it for 30 years. It can also make cleats, blocks and pulleys like new.
Rudder locks return to normal.

Go the to local discount store and buy a bag of practice "wiffle" golf balls. Cut one in half, exactly. Place this in the mast step indention and forego lubricants forever.

It will fit perfectly, provide a slip fit and won't tend to come out even when the mast is down.
