New vs used

Hi guys,

Thinking about adding to the fleet...

Wondering if anyone that bought a new Getaway as opposed to used Getaway wished they'd done the opposite or vice versa?

It looks like a 2015 with wings, trailer, tax, etc is going to run somewhere around $12,500.
A used 2007 (on this very forum) is going for $5000 obo.

Any differences between those years besides freshness of sails, hulls?

Based on that (and other used boats for sale) it looks like the depreciation is something like:

Year 1 - $2000 ($10,000-$10,500) [Avg/Year = $2000]
Year 2 - $1000 ($9,000-$9,500) [Avg/Year = $1500]
Year 3 - $1000 ($8,000-$8,500) [Avg/Year = $1333]
Year 4 - $750 ($7,250-$7,750) [Avg/Year = $1187]
Year 5 - $750 ($6,500-$7,250) [Avg/Year = $1100]
Year 6 - $500 ($6,000-$6,500) [Avg/Year = $1000]
Year 7 - $500 ($5,500-$6,000) [Avg/Year = $928]
Year 8 - $500 ($5,000-$5,500) [Avg/Year = $875]
Year 9 - $250 on, bottom of market seems to currently be between $3,500-$4,000)

So a new one is going to cost anywhere from $5.40/day (first year) to $2.39/day...

Not sure where I'm going with any of this, I think trying to somehow justify / talk myself into a new boat

the new rudder system makes a BIG difference. I do not know when they started.

I too, would like to know what folks think as well. I am in the market and wondering what board wisdom thinks.
Am coming to cats from mono hulls 30 years ago..Either is doable but why throw money away if not a good idea?

Bought a used 2001 that needed work for 1150 with no trailer.

spent 1100 on a new jib front and rear tramps wings and snorkel

spent 140 on new lines

I think this was a good deal and I got the fun of rerigging the boat and saved a few bucks IMHO.

When I bought mine, the only used ones I could find were older than I would have liked.
If I could have found one no more than 3 years old, I would have bought it. But I didn't. No regrets, you don't usually buy boats for investment, but for fun. And Firefly (my Getaway) has been worth every penny!

I just wish I could find storage for less than the $110/month I'm currently paying. But it's a storage garage with 24 hour access and security.

Let someone else pay the depreciation but avoid buying a project instead of a Hobie.

Ha! Too true! I bought a H-17 new, and had great fun with it for 7 years. Sold it and regretted it. Later bought a used H-17 that turned out to be a ridiculous project, including a dismasting!

If you can afford it and plan on keeping it a long time I would recommend buying new. If money is an issue or you don't know how long you will keep it go used.

4 or 5 years ago I bought a 2006 in very good condition and have been sailing it since. It's still in very good condition and I have had to do very little to keep it in top shape, other than replacing front and rear tramps. Keep in mind this is very expensive, especially the front tramp. Other than that I have had very few problems. Never regretted it.

I bought mine used in 2009 (it's a 2002). Everything is great condition except for a small tear in the main tramp which has not gotten any worse over the years. So, 7 year old boat at the time for $2250. Included wings and brand new aftermarket front tramp (original was trashed). Bought a used trailer for $750. So $3000 and I was happy.

Added a gas outboard motor and made a custom mount in 2010. Added new trap rigging in 2011 along with all new standing rigging. Replaced the front tramp with another aftermarket for $350 in 2012 due to failure of the stitching. Hobie brand definitely worth the money as I am still using the original main tramp. Trailer has been rebuilt due to leaf spring failure which meant a new axle. Gas motor has been a headache for the past few years. Maybe going electric next year. Main tramp is showing it's age along with wing seat covers so looking into buying replacements due to cosmetics. Sails starting to show age (dull and dirty). Tried cleaning but not much improvement. The boat itself has been great.

Do not regret buying used at all. Maybe should have gone with new trailer and electric motor though.
