Upwind performance

Like most questions about performance the only real answer is "it depends".

It depends on the expertise and weight of skipper and crew on the two boats, it depends on sea state/chop, it depends on how much wind and current.

If you are interested in racing, you probably should look at other manufacturers' boats, such as nacra or find a used Formula boat.

In terms of pointing and compared with other multihulls, I only have had experience against trimarans on the same patch of water. The Getaway outpointed a windrider 17 (similar skeg construction) and pointed about the same as a weta (centerboard). But any keelboat outpointed the Getaway by 15 degrees or so.

VMG stats are pretty useless since, again, they depend on the same things listed above.

A Getway doesn't point as good as a Hobie 16 - period. But it is not that much worse. Keep your weight ahead as much as you can help and you can put a bit of tension on the opposite jib sheet to act as a kind of jib traveler. But unless you are racing or if you have to get somewhere upwind just sail out and sail beam reaches! That is what is fun and a Getaway can be a surprisingly fast boat. Given how quick it is to rig you maximize your time on the water as well.
