Hobie gives you standard split rings which are difficult to fiddle with each outing. You can cheaply replace them with something to make your ife easier.

If those links don't work, just go to amazon and search for split cotter rings. The marine grade rings have two bends the standard ones don't have...one points a piece down and away from the ring making it easy to spear the hole, the other has a bend toward the middle which will help do the same thing. Much easier to use, especially for folks (like me) whose hands are old and gnarly from many thousands of miles sailing.

The bit sticking out can be like a fishing hook. Tape over the ones you don't need to remove all the time.

I have a FAQ on rings:

There is a tool that holds them open for installation. Fishing shops may have that. Needle nose pliers or forceps work too.

Tape


I tape every ring that is not required to be removed. The ones at the anchor pin, twist toggle and shrouds (H16 / One side on other models requiring rig tensioning via the shroud). Tape helps to keep the rings from twisting out and covers the sharp ends that could catch on a sheet, rope or dock. Catching a line on a ring can pull them right out of a clevis pin. Also use boots over the adjusters. Use caution when pulling the boots down over the rings. Fold the ring flat against the adjuster / wire as you drop the boot down. This helps to prevent the boot from catching a ring and peeling it out.

Tape every ring that could possibly catch on lines or sails. This is especially true for spinnaker equipped boats or for longer voyages.

You can use a small piece of tape folded over the ring like bread on a sandwich or tape clear round the adjusters and rings several times.

Those are neat, for those sticking with ring dings. I wouldn't live without my quick release pins on the forestay and shrouds though, especially with tensioning the rig. I recently eliminated one more ring ding from my setup by installing a Ronstan Battlestick tiller extension, which uses a rubber coupling to attach to the tiller bar.

Matt is correct that one should tape these things each time but I can tell you that I don't do that and in 7000 miles of sailing day sails and races I haven't had any issues. Granted, there is always a first time. The thing is, even losing the rig (mine has come down a half dozen times over the years on different boats), there usually is no one hurt and no damage to the mast or boat. Again, there is always a first time.

Speaking for myself, I try to minimize PITA hardware as much as possible. Split rings are PITA if you have to remove them or put them back on; for equipment that doesn't have to be taken apart often, keep them.

I always carry insulating tape to tape up all clevis pins. It's good seamanship to reduce risks where ever, it can easily be done, this being a case in point. A simple and cheap thing to do.

I just started using a toggle pin with lanyard for the forestay, no issues as of yet. Shrouds are always connected to the boat even when trailering, so I kept the stock clevis pins.
