I am interested in buying a used Wave and was told they made changes over the years. Although I would like a new one, I can't afford one. Can anyone tell me what changes the Wave has gone through over the years to help me decide what a good year to buy is?

I'm not aware of all of the changes that the Wave went through, but rudders and mast bast are two that I can think of.
A used Wave can be hard to find, so focus on over all condition and availability over year model. Mine is a 2001, old style rudders & ball post mast step and its just fine. I had to drive 200 mile one way to get it and I was fortunate to find one.

that's a start right there as I just learned something. I am in South Florida and see there aren't many out there for sale, so maybe I'll end up driving a ways. But I am just beginning. Thanks for your input

I saw that. There are quite a few out there but all a long drive and I hope to find one in SW Florida region (Tampa Bay- Sarasota). But I am in no big hurry so I am trying to learn what I can about the different model changes over the years. As time goes by I might have to expand my search area.

Not so much a year related change, but there were two versions: standard and club. I only know of two differences:

1. Club has the 3 piece, laced tramp. Standard tramp is - I think - 1 piece and attached with velcro straps and tensioners.

2. Quote from mmiller: "The wires (shrouds and forestay / bridles) are a little different. The club uses shroud adjusters, clevis pins and rings that allow for more adjustment in mast rake / tension."

Keep in mind that the old style rudders allow you to adjust the rake of the rudder, but the newer EZ Loc version rudders have no adjustment for rake. I like the old style rudders for this reason.

I have a 1998 Wave that I restored to like new condition. I feel like I have the best of both worlds now.... a like new boat with the old style rudders. I also prefer the color schemes on a lot of the older sails, but that's a personal preference thing.
It's not that hard to restore one of these boats to like new condition. You can have a "like new" Wave for 1/2 the cost of a new one.
Something to keep in mind......

Probably the biggest difference is the two trampoline styles. The "classic" tramp is designed for quick disassembly for cartop transportation, but you can't get it as tight as a "club" tramp. I came up with a fix for that though:
