That trip sounds like a blast. Did you need a GPS or was the island and your return location visible? I am working on a trip from Miami to Bimini it's 43nm. The issue is the screaming gulf stream. I am really looking for people who have done it already. I've read about 3 guys who went from Palm Beach to the Bahamas which was even further 70nm.

I did not NEED a GPS for my trip, a regular compass would have worked just fine. You could not see the island from mainland (you could see it if you went to the top of one of the highrise condo buildings on the beach). We were several miles out before the island was visible. Mainland, with all its tall structures, could be seen from the island however.

I too would like to do the Miami to Bimini trip. I think I will save up and buy myself a larger cabin cruiser before I try that one however. Good luck on your go at it.
