Noob Questions Anyone?

Hello,

My wife and I are looking at a used Hobie Wave, just wondering if anyone would like to field a few questions.

1. First, the low hanging fruit; How is the Wave for a first-timer? And is $2500 a reasonable price? (It looks and sounds like it's in good shape)
2. The one we are looking at does not come with a trailer. Can someone point me in a direction for a proper roof rack? Any tips on this would also be appreciated.
3. I've noticed ( ) that there isn't any sort of motor, what do you do if the wind dies out?
4. What else should I ask here?

Any other advice would be appreciated.

Great first boat. Super easy to sail. Durable.



I would get a trailer. Car topping will just reduce the number of times you will use it. If it is just to get home... You can rent something that would work.



Paddle works well. It takes very little wind to move it and if paddled moves easily.

What do you think of that price? Without a trailer?

When I wanted a Wave I looked for a used one and didn't have any luck, so bought a new one. The few used ones that I have seen since then were quite a bit more expensive than that. I'd inspect it carefully and, if it's in good shape, I think the price is good simply because there aren't many to choose from.

1. YES! Great boat from first timer and will take you to pretty advanced high wind sailing as well[/color].And is $2500 a reasonable price? Depends on the year. Middle of the road price for $2500 I would expect a trailer for that. Ive owned 4 so far. They are such a robust boat that your main concern should be tramp and sail 2 big ticket items. Ive bought waves for a steal at $600 (no trailer, no work needed) to $2000 including trailer. I personally wouldn't buy a newer more expensive one just because an older one will be just as good. These boats hold up and last.
2. I prefer trailering. Try to get one with the purchase, keep looking. Car topping is a pain in the ass to do every time you want to sail. It can be done though. Ive bought 2 of them and car topped the boat home from 2 states away no problem.
3. Get a paddle or two. Know the weather whenever you go out. Plan on sailing when the forecast is for wind. I don't bother going out unless the forecast is for a minimum of 10 knots.
4. What else should I ask here? ANYTHING!

What about winter storage? I live in VT, would I need to store it in a garage or would it be OK in a post barn (no walls)?

And what about roof racks? Can you get a roof rack where you don't have to disassemble the darn thing?

Covered open air garage is totally fine. I have kept mine covered outside no problem in NY with freezing temps. I always store my mast, rigging, rudders and sails indoors though. Just don't keep the sails outdoors and when indoors keep away from areas that mice may make a nest in them, chew em up and stain the crap out of them. Happened to me once. Just make sure the boat is drained no water in hulls to freeze.
As far as roof racks keeping the boat assembled that is completely unrealistic. boat is pretty heavy to lift up on a rooftop assembled. You can find a small trailer and convert it pretty easily using 4"x4" posts horizontally. Even try a local harbor freight trailer for $299 its better option.

Yes store mast inside or make sure it lays flat as I had over 2 liters of water in my brand new mast. Had to drill a hole in mast to get water out. (Hobie told me to do that). Or you will Crack your base of mast if left standing up
