Ok the more i read the more confused i am. Does down side imaging work in the transducer cutout without modification or not? How about chirp? Do not want to spend money on features that will not work and am not ready to do any mods to the cutout or cover yet.

Thanks

I have a Humminbird fish finder with the transducer mounted in the transducer pocket. The regular sonar performance is great, and I really like having the transducer protected in the pocket. However, I've been pretty unimpressed by the performance of the down imaging sonar. I don't know if that is because I do mostly deep water fishing, or because the performance of the down imaging feature is degraded when the transducer is mounted in the transducer pocket of a Hobie kayak.

On the fish finders I'm familiar with, a side scan sonar transducer is supposed to be mounted below or behind the keel of a boat or kayak, so the hull doesn't interfere with sonar signals going out to the sides. So a side scan sonar transducer would probably work poorly if mounted in the transducer pocket of a Hobie kayak.

Are asking about DownScan, as in a Lowrance Elite HDI unit that does sonar and DownScan or StructureScan, which does sidescan?

Tim

CHIRP works, I have a 7 and has been working fine, TX fits in the Hobie TX hole. Side scan doesn't work as said unless the TX is below the hull line.

I have an ELITE-5 CHIRP with the 83/200 transducer installed in my 2015 Outback and it works perfectly. You need to play around with the individual color patterns within the 2D and the Downscan windows individually first, then switch to a split screen to see the final effects. There are a few YouTube videos that have some good tips for settings. Here's a few items to check:

1. Is your transducer mounted flush or does it have a little space between the keel plate and the transducer?
2. Did you seal all your connections? I solder all my connections, heat shrink them then wrap with electrical tape.
3. Did you place dielectric grease on all your electrical connections?

Ever since I started doing these simple things in my FF installs, I've had no issues.

Had a lowrance and switched to a raymarine mounted in the fishfinder pocket, I rarely use the downscan, but increased resolution of chirp was worthwhile. I fish primarily deeper water (50-300ft), so maybe for shallower fishing downscan is more valuable.

I have a lowrance chirp 7 combo and the sonar and down scan work really well.. Mines mounted on a pro angler 14 2015 model.. I've got some videos of it in action and with my electric motor at http://youtu.be/XIhi_yPoakU

And also here with a Mulloway at http://youtu.be/UF24K2Xyzgo

Hope it helps..

Installed a Lowrance elite chirp 4 HDI in my PA 14 2015 everything fits like a glove, transducer fits perfectly no modifications needed. So far everything works as it should...

This is a lousy cell phone pic of my elite 4 HDI. It's a pic from the DI mode of a tree I was catching crappie from. I've been extremely pleased with it and how easy it was to install in my outback in the lowrance ready pocket.

Just curious...can you screenshot on the elite 4 hdi? Pain to get it off there and onto the computer but just wondering.

Yes, you can save a screenshot to a microSD card by pressing Power and then Zoom (+).
