Remco/Hobie battery

Hi,

Anyone had an issues re-charging? The battery was discharged but on connecting it to the charger the green light came on showing it to be full. Checked it with a meter and its showing zero. The battery has been used six times. Varying ideas on here to what you get on various Lowrance units, my own experience, 5 HDI plotter combo-8 hours constant use on a bright daytime setting. It’s been discharged fully twice. Might well be a faulty charger, on the other hand maybe the full discharge? I would be surprised if this usage degraded batteries in such a short period but don’t know much about this side of things.

No, my Hobie battery and charger are over 2 years old and no issues..... Sounds like the charger is faulty if the battery measures less than 12.2 V DC and the charger red light does not come on.....suggest trying try a trickle charger or a charger that supplies less than 2 amps DC to your battery.

I had a bad motorcycle battery that I fixed with a high quality CTEK battery charger. If you happen to know someone with a CTEK (or similar) charger that you can borrow, you might give it a try as a test. Granted, the motorcycle battery that I fixed is slightly larger than the gel cell I use for my fish finder and it was a wet cell and not a gel cell. I also had a gel cell for my motorcycle which went bad after less than one year and could not be fixed so your success in case your battery went bad might be hit or miss.

You should never fully discharge these type of batteries. A hobie charger even if it is working will not charge it. You need a high quality charger or take it to a battery place to get it charged.

Thanks for the replies. Father in law is fairly savvy and a bit of a tech when it comes to this sort of equipment. He’s managed to get it working, not sure what was wrong as I’ve picked it up when he wasn’t at home. I will however have to listen to how he did it, small price to pay and I’ll probably learn something.

A lot of times batteries will fall too low for the battery charger to charge especially if it's a 'smart' charger. Hooking the battery up to another battery or using just a plain charger will get the battery up so it can be charged with you other charger.

If you're running out of power too soon then you could get a Lithium Iron battery. A 35 amp hour battery is about the size of a motor cycle battery but only weighs a couple pounds compared to the lead acid batteries that are only about 7 amp hours and very heavy.
However, these batteries are just over $200 on Amazon from Battery Tender but if you are going to deep cycle the battery you will need a balancing charger so you don't over charge one of the cells.

I just purchased one of the Li Iron batteries and I'll use my RC plane charger to charge it since it has a built in balancer...at least for now. A separate balancer can be bought at an RC hobby shop for around $20 so you may be able to use a regular motorcycle charger with it.

I just purchased the Shorai brand battery and probably I'll buy their charger since I know it has a built in balancer.

Keep it charged when not in use. I use a little solar panel.

Having the same issue as Das Bite, battery discharged and now the charger that came along with it won't charge it. Can anyone recommend a high quality charger or any charger that will restore these batteries to a chargeable state? A simple disclaimer warning of this when purchasing the battery would have been nice. So many seem to have learned this the hard way.
