I'm looking at an 06 outback that is in great condition and has all the stuff. My question is what is the difference between the 06 and the 2010 models.

I'll take a stab at this one, but I could be wrong.

I'm guessing the '06 has a lever to bring up and down the rudder, the new will have two T handles to bring it up and down. Much nicer.

The 06 will have two knobs to screw the mirage drive in place, the new will have a click and go system that's much faster.

The seats have changed.

That's all that I can think of off the top of my head. There could be more changes. But don't forget, even though the new features are nice, it's not like the old ones were garbage. There were some people on the forum who liked old seats better then new seats, and for others, although the click and go system is easier, people didn't mind the screw in knob system.

Most people really like the up down rudder controls, but its up to you if the new features are worth the money,

In addition to those items, in about 2008 - 2009 Hobie modified and improved several of the parts on the Mirage Drive and refers to it as V2. It includes new sprockets, drums, mast, etc. You'll learn a lot about it and the changes by checking out the "Hobie Mirage Drive - FAQ" on this forum, as well as countless other posts. This will also give you lots of information to help you evaluate the condition of the 06 Outback Mirage drive.

A major change was to the contour of the bottom of the yak... The later models are much more stable IMHO. Rudder was changed to lay flat on the yak in the newer ones, the older ones the rudder stick out the back and only raises upward to clear the water... Transporting you have to protect the rudder a little more.

I have an 06 model n have never had any issues with the boat to date.. Till I seen the new Angler pro that is...Now I want that boat! just scared to look for a price tag for it yet... it can't be good...

The difference between a 2006 Outback and the latest version Outback is night and day. In my opinion, they are completely different kayaks. My best advice is for you to visit your local dealer and demo the new Hobie Outback. That way you'll really be able to see the difference first hand for yourself.

Actually the older models are more stable in rough water, the newer models more stable in calm water.

A flat hull has good primary stabilty, but poorer secondary stability. A rounded or deep V hull has poorer primary stability but better secondard stability.

I have a 2005 Outback. I fish with 2 guys that have the 2008 models. In really rough water they get scared and go in. I just sit easy and let my older Outback rise and fall - it doesn't roll with the swells like theirs do.

I greatly prefer the older lever for raising and lowering the rudder. Most users are unaware that it is a 3-position lever: Up/lock, down/lock, down/unlock.

In the down/unlock position, you never have to worry about hitting something with it and damaging it - it just kicks up upon hitting an obstruction.

Having said that, I do like the concept of the newer twist and stow rudder. Gets it completely out of the way when transporting or storing the kayak.
