just my two cents, (after the 20k to be a weekend warrior)
I love the tiger. My wife loves the tiger. she's 100lbs and 5 ft and can run the spin all day. Yes bieng new in the class im in the back of the pack and still learning as is she but its fun and thats what this is all about. with the new boat i have chances to do distance sailing and long down wind runs that would suck on my old 18 but are fun under that big old spin. Yes converting to the "SNU" helped with the setting and retrieving of the spin for her but overall i think the investment is totally worth it. as far as the 18 to 16 argument there is more adjustability in the 18 but the 16 sailors are generally better overall boat for boat. but the main point is to do this for the fun and friendships made.
Afew years ago in san felipe i watched a 18 sailor get off his boat and change the rudder pin on another boat so his competion wouldn't miss a race the two were tied in points at the time . Thats why i sail hobie the people and the fun.

Hey Rich, nice post but you're lighting up the angry mood of this thread!
You're right though, for the most part, WE are different that the other classes in all the right ways. Sure, they have nice people too, but not the way we do. I have seen countless instances of charity and goodwill like your example and thats why alot of us spend the time and $$ doing what we do.
Classes legality, cost, boat acceptance, apathy: these are just small examples of adversity that can be overcome with minimal effort and openmindedness (is that a word?)
Its all about the fun.......

SSSSHHH! Don't tell these women that they hate sailing spin boats!
Here are a few my all-time favorite women sailors...Along with Daisy of course, Rich!

Patty- of the Frank and Patty duo. She hoists the spin like nothin!
(SF Bay)

Image

Tiffany- of the Mark and Tiffany team. She can hoist the spi faster than any dude on the water, bar none. How many of you Tiger guys have seen the transoms of that boat?? (Monterey Bay)

The skipper takes the glory...The crew wins the race!

Ok guys this is harrys niece megan. now i know you dont believe me when i say that im bored on a h16 but its true all i do in light wind or heavy is pull the sheetline in when we tack or jibe, and then im just dead weight till we tack or jibe again. so im just sitting, which isn't enough for me. i was 12 when i raced in that north americans and 9 when i just started racing. but get this i stared out on a prindile19 not a laser or a h14 or a h16 or opti. but its true i stared out on the p19 and the only reason we stoped was because one day i became a ping pong ball and went into the mast then around the front of the boat and bounced back and forth between the hulls. so he realized we need to be on a more stable boat so he put together the h18 again and believe it or not im still a little bored on the h18. sorry guys but im a very mature type A 13 year old. :)
megan

Guys,

I guess I won't be skipper for much longer .... and maybe I will be looking for a f-18 w/spin

Harry

They are getting smarter younger.

Go Megan!! You need to look no further for sailing inspiration than my previous post. Those two women are AWESOME!

To help you feel more than just 'dead weight', a lot of skippers have their crew call tactics, and adjust the main traveler in the puffs. Sounds to me you need to talk your skipper into buying a Tiger;)
