2008 Hobie 17, 18, Tiger North American Championships

Many of you will know already, but I would like to fomally invite all Hobie 17, 18 and Tiger sailors to join us, Fleet 214, 263 and Division 4, to Beautiful British Columbia, Canada and a small little town called Harrison Hot Springs for the 2008 North American Championships. Harrison is at the foot of a 30 mile long lake in the Costal Mountain of BC offering beautiful scenery, great weather and wonderful sailing. It is the favoured location of many Division 4 sailors. The dates are August 25-29, 2008, with the Divison 4 Championship regatta preceeding the event on August 23/24. You are invited to attend that as well.

As of today, Jan 30th, online registration is now available for the 17,18 and Tiger event at Harrison. Go to the website at http://www.2008hobienac.com, click on the registration page. There is a .pdf document you can fill out online, print it, and email to us to let us know you''re coming!

Remember to print it because you still have to send us a cheque or money order with your payment. Address is on the form.

Things are shaping up to be a fun event with lots of surprises (hopefully none on the water!)

Has anyone looked into what is required to bring a boat into Canada? If anything? Mexico is a might shadier than our hockey stick toting neighbors to the north but you do need a title present and if the boat is not yours you have to have notorized permission saying you can use it.

I've never been asked more than, "Is that your boat?" or questions meant to ferret out whether you plan to sell it in CAN. I've never been asked for documentation and I cross the border at least a dozen times a season.

It doesn't hurt to bring proof of ownership (copy of purchase receipt or title) or a notarized letter from the owner allowing you to take the boat into Canada, exactly what for and for how long.

Telling the border guards exactly the truth never hurts, either. Don't be vague. Be excited that you're going to a sailboat race.

You'll get more of an interrogation coming back into the US. Make sure to have a passport - it's not required (yet), but it's the preferred method if identification.

Yeah, typically the Canucks aren't the problem -- it's coming back that's the hard part!! But I haven't had a problem with the boat. Kids? Yes. But boats -- no.

Harrison is a mountain lake and as such, is tactical. But a nice southerly thermal develops and as the wind whips up the Fraser valley, it comes onto the lake with no fetch. So you are looking at good breeze and flat water!! Now you know why we love to sail there!!

Good beach. Good town. Good food. Good bars. There is a natural hot spring in the middle of town. They built it into a swimming/wading pool. For like $3 CDN you can go swimming in the pool. Very nice.

The new border crossing rules go into effect today. Passports, green cards or birth certificates with photo I.D. are now required for all persons crossing into the U.S. No exceptions.

Matt is correct about crossing the border with a boat. I too have never had an issue and I probably cross the border more often than Matt. The Canucks are more interested in firearms, pepper spray and alcohol being brought into Canada. Just be polite and truthful with a smile. When asked about any alcohol it doesn't hurt to tell them you're bringing your favorite Canadian beer into the country

I think the question relates directly to the fact that there maybe one trailer with as many as 10 boats on it going across the line up in BC and being correctly loaded up with the info the border guys want may ensure the boats all get there (or get back).

Also, does anyone else get a little scared at the incredible amount of really strange clip art Bounds has at his fingertips? A true internet Jedi.

So.. why does matt have all these pictures? (hopefully not for picture examples!)

Regarding the boats and the big trailers. We've never had an issue bringing the 3stack through the border (usually the question of where are the other owners, my answer ' they're the lucky ones who get to fly' )

It probably wouldn't hurt to have somesort of ownership document for each boat and the NOR and registration form for the event, although it's never been a problem before.. one never knows.
