Gudgeon Repair

Finally sailed for the first time this year and the wing repair held great. But I now have a new problem. The top gudgeon on the port hull pulled out of the hull leaving a hole about 1/2" bigger than the gudgeon. Not to be left alone the lower gudgeon on the port hull is cracked about 1/3 of the way around. It had been repaired by the prior owner but apparently not to well.

I'm wondering if the best (bulletproof) fix is to have a large section of the transom rebuilt or to go an inch round each of the gudgeon's.

Any suggestions?

Gudgeons thread into aluminum plates bonded to the inside of the transom. I'd guess one pulled out. I would gain access (inspection port installed in the deck) Reinforce a larger area inside the hull and then through bolt the gudgeons back in place using a backing plate of some kind.

Did you find plywood in your transom, and was it deteriorated? I did a repair on aft corner of boat and found that my 21se had a plywood plate in the transom. the area around one of the gudgeons is swelled up so am thinking that the plywood is starting to swell and I may have the same issue at some point

this is the view inside you can see that it is built up where the plywood sheet is laminated inyou can see the edge of the plywood that is sandwiched in the transom

I didn't feel plywood, just glass that had broken from the inside. On the worst side the aluminum plate was completely free.

drew what number boat is yours and what year built, i cant see any sign of aluminum plate in mine it must be somewhere in the laminations. check the other thread on my repairs, i have bunch of pictures of inside boat

There is probably plywood with a hole/fitting cut out for the plate with the same thickness. Then it is all glassed over. Probably why the breakout was clean and into the hull rather than pulling out which would have been more natural.

hey Drew I took a better look into the hull at the transom and could see that the aluminum plates are definately added on the inside of the plywood then glassed in place
