This coastal voyage originates in Mission Bay and travels south along the Point Loma peninsula and into San Diego Bay. I started at Dana Landing Public Launch and ended at Shelter Island Public Launch.
Because of the length, coastal water hazards, possible sea life encounters, and large vessel traffic, this is not an adventure for the novice and/or solo boater.
Three personal traits you will need:
1.) Be in good physical shape.
2.) Have very proficient boating skills.
3.) An complete understanding of the capabilities of your boat.
Points to consider to make your voyage an enjoyable experience.
1.) Tides - Best to have the tide going out when exiting Mission Bay and coming in when entering San Diego.
2.) Forecast Knowledge - tide, swell/surf, wind, weather
3.) Food and Water - little dosages of both throughout the voyage. Eat before you are hungry, drink before you are thirsty
4.) Water and Land Support. A support boat is very reassuring (hopefully you won't need their assistance). You will need to shuttle boats before or after.
