We have had our TI a very long time now and have never capsized (knock on wood). We have safety lines on our AMA's that prevent the AMA from folding in just in case we ever break that nylon sheer bolt that locks the AMA in the out position. If that nylon bolt breaks it is highly likely the AMA will fold in and result in a capsize. To the best of my knowledge as long as you don't go out in crazy winds and seas (over 12-15 mph winds), it's extremely unlikely to capsize a TI. If your going along and the AMA buries completely, you have to release the sail or turn into the wind pretty quickly. When I'm in heavy winds I typically try not to cleat my sail control line, or at the very least keep the line in my hand ready to uncleat and release if I hit a gust.
In higher winds I always furl my sail some, so the side force can't possibly tip my boat over, We don't go as fast, but in my opinion it's way safer.
We are not thrill seekers, we just want to use the boat to get us from point A to point B, and enjoy the water along the way, sure beats standing on the beach wishing you were out there (lol)
Hope this helps
Bob

Pete -

This thread is extremely helpful for figuring out things you might want to have on hand:
https://www.hobiecat.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=54281&p=252960&hilit=bilge+pump#p252960

Remember my former reference to stupid rookie mistakes? My daughter and I opened the drain plug in the back of the boat last time we had it out and it was still "piddling" from the back of the trailer so we left it open. Guess what we forgot to do when we took it out yesterday? Let it suffice to say that the mast cup wasn't the only way our new hand bilge pump came in handy -- as did our new dry bag! But even with all the water we took in, we sailed for a couple hours and returned back to the club safely before we even knew we had a problem! What an awesome little boat!

We put a leash at the bow eye to help us pull the boat around the launch bay -- but then the leash was dragging in the water. I'm going to take a lesson from someone else on the forum and install a shackle in the bow eye so that we can clip the leash on and off the larger shackle with a spring clip. We put leashes on our paddles, too; the first few times we went out, we didn't understand how to stow the paddles and didn't think we needed them. It only took us once or twice to get pushed up against the beach or the dock to recognize the benefit of being able to use a paddle to push out, or to help steer in super shallow water with the rudder up.

These forums are packed with good ideas, and it makes the boat more fun to figure out what will work for us and make it our own.

With my windsurfers, I adopted the practice of attaching a spring clamp (e.g. http://www.harborfreight.com/2-12-in-ny ... 69290.html) to one of the footstraps whenever I loosened the vent plug.

Tighten the vent plug: remove the clamp. Loosen the vent plug: attach the clamp.

I don't think we have ever used the drain plugs on any of our Hobie's (too easy to forget to put back in)

We forgot to put ours in one day too. Sailed for a couple hours and barely had any water in the hull.
