I lost the small batten on my TI the first day on my boat. My retainer didn't break, the string just came loose from the cap due to the high winds. When it first happened the dealer contacted Hobie who said they didn't have the part available yet. Then I asked again a few weeks ago and they were going to have to special order it, which would have cost me close to $20 with shipping if I remember correctly. (Didn't get a part number). I ended up going to a local sail repair/maker shop (just north of Ft. Lauderdale) where I purchased what I needed for around $8. I measured the length I needed, then brought my other batten along with me to try to match it up best I could. The diameter was only slightly larger and I got a new (non Hobie) cap to fit this batten (light sanding of the batten was required to fit the cap). I just had to drill a small hole in the cap to run the string through to attach it in my sail.
I will note that I did sail multiple times without the small batten without any trouble.
