I'm looking for advice from more experienced folks who've made this choice or wish they hadn't before!

I have an '11 Adventure hull (from '09 replacement) and am considering installing the AI conversion kit or selling my Adventure and buying a discounted '11 demo Adventure Island. It doesn't look to be to hard to install the conversion, curios to hear others thoughts who has done it and if they would do it again. I would be using the sail about 40% of the time on kayak, rest of time is strictly fishing. I currently have the small sail kit, I use between the Adventure, Revo and Oasis, just want to get a little more out of the Adventure!

Pro's on conversion; cheaper, don't have to have to sell kayak 1st, no re-rigging rod mounts, ff/gps, etc.
Cons on conversion; older V1 aka design, installation issues.

Pro's on sell/buy AI; already setup, warranty, newer rudder, newer aka design.
Con's on sell/buy AI; have to sell kayak 1st, cost, re-rigging fishing setups.

I still need to crunch some numbers with the discount price, conversion kit price and selling price of my kayak.
Thanks in advance for all advice and input.

Bob, the warrantee and the value of your time are the factors I would weigh.

I can tell you, the AI does not sail $2000 better, having the new Aka bars.

But shouldn't there be a V2 conversion kit by now?

I never had a problem with the old style aka bars. If there was ever an issue with the old style it was more to do with the paint versus powder coating finish.
In many ways I preferred the old pin connector. It was simple and effective and didn't have the galvanic corrosion and sloppy play (over time) problems that are evident from the rivets on the new knuckles (aluminium rivets with steel centre pin

NOHUHU my last stop at a Hobie dealer in Florida, first week in September, and the conversion kit was still V.1 crossbars. Don't know if that is good or bad.

The service life of V.2 bars is yet to be determined since they are new.
Thankfully, I don't have the problem with loose rivets but I do have corrosion around the rivets at the knuckle joint. I also have the rounding of the socket groves where the akas lock.
I used the Hobie tramps all the time until the buckles gave out and then made a copy of the original NOHUHU bat-bench which locks the akas tight and reduces the torsional forces.
The V.1 bars have a proven track record and there are modifications to tighten the bushing and adding exterior carpet to the joint to reduce motion.
I haven't bought a conversion for my adventure hull because I want the V.2 crossbars so I have the same parts as our 2011 AI.

A new AI also has a new rudder, rudder handle, center carrying handles, foam flotation and larger dagger board.

I removed the carrying handles due to splashing.
New rudder handle is nice but you can get the parts and do a conversion.
The new straight up down rudder is nice in shallow water and is strong as a battleship. There is no over-powering the new rudder. Full sail and a jib works great. Sadly, can't be put on older hulls.

It seems to be more a question of time and money. Since you already outfitted one hull we already know you have the skill.
Hard choice improve a proven friend or risk the unknown of new possibilities.
Or avoid the choice have both and say the new AI is for the wife.

lol....Always a possibility! That argument worked in selling my '08 Oasis to buy an '11 Oasis. I did it for her so she could steer and control the kayak as I was doing it all wrong!
But, I in return I had to agree to take her to Aruba! Everything has a price!

Thanks all for the input with my choices. Most likely a winter project if I do the conversion, may wait and see if the V2 kit comes available. As I already have the '11 hull, is the newer AI,TI rudder available to buy yet as an accessory? If so, part#?

Contact your dealer/point of purchase and ask about getting the new rudder for free.
I think the new rudder was for both 2011 adventures and AIs, can't hurt to ask.

But that will leave you with another choice, install as directed and have lines across the inside of your rear hatch or use the original spectra lines direct to the new rudder.
I did the "failure to follow instructions" and have a clear hatch.

Matt had said that the solo Adventure ships with the smaller rudder.

Is that the non-sailing T&S you have on your 2012 now Bob?

If so, it would make sense to wait for the 2012 upgrade kit and would make further sense to include the larger vertical rudder in that kit.

I have the large sailing rudder & turbo's on the '11 Adventure already.

The demo '11 AI has the larger AI/TI replacement rudder installed. From what I've heard & read the larger 'new replacement rudder' isn't really as necessary on the AI as it is on the TI and can actually cause more unwanted drag when the AI is used as an Adventure without the sail. But as speed is not so much a factor for me when using the Adventure for fishing, not sailing, and dealing with current/wind conditions, I would think the 'newer replacement rudder', would give better, quicker response compared to the sailing rudder.

One dealer I spoke with said the conversion kit he would order are the V2's, would like to see if the 'newer replacement rudder kit' is included instead of the sailing rudder.

Questions regarding the new 2011 Adventure hull.

1. Can I purchase this at this time, and then add the AI sailing kit at a later date?

2. Can the AI sailing kit be fitted to the Adventure hull? I think I see a small sail hole on the Adventure in the catalogues.

3. How much can I expect to pay on the AI sailing kit as an add-on to convert the Adventure into an Adventure Island?

thanks,

Jim

Well I purchased the 'new' left over '11 AI and have a question. Is the daggerboard still included as standard equipment on the '11 model? It was not with the package, dealer said Hobie does not include it and it's sold as an option.

The Adventure Island has always included a daggerboard.

Hi Bob - sounds like you're having fun !

which dealer are you dealing with ? Im in E. Northport and usually sail out of northport/huntington harbor.

I wouldn't expect the daggerboard to come with the adventure-only but would certainly expect it with the AI

... you're a brave man going out in todays weather !!

Brrrrrr

Alan,
I've always dealt w/Jerry @ Captain Kayak, Sayville. Great guy, couldn't ask for a better, more knowledgeable person. I believe it was just missing in the shipment, Jerry took care of it. Hoping to find out more details by next week if Hobie changed something as far as including it.

Tried it out on Lake Ronkonkoma, very impressed to say the least! Easy to set up, sail and enjoy! I'll make a few more test runs to figure some things out before I get into rigging it for fishing. Some of the ways I rigged my Adventure will not work out with the AI.
